Two days later...

I had my first OQO scare yesterday when I went to Bryant Park to see if (and how well) I could pick up the park's free wireless signal. I pressed the power button, and nothing happened... I held the power button down for a couple of seconds, then five seconds, then more than five seconds... Still nothing... At which point I thought...

Oh boy, I've had the OQO for a day and its already broken... I didn't drop it so I doubt that it shut itself down, so...

After lunch, I went back to the office and removed the battery. When I reattached it and tried again, the unit came to life... Phew!

What I've found since then is that it does this just about every time I put it in its case. At this point, I'm not sure if something is being moved out of place when this happens. I'll be opening a trouble ticket with OQO about this and hope that their answer isn't that I have to send it in to be repaired.

Edit: This turned out to be the battery problem that I described in the "The OQO is dead..." blog entry.

What's also strange about this is that the case is starting to loosen up and its no longer difficult to insert and remove the unit.

Regarding the heat issue, I stand by my original impression... My unit's "heat to silence" ratio is set at 50:50 and during a virus scan that I performed last night (while plugged in), the unit became a bit hotter than normal but not by a significant amount (even with the disk and fan spinning frantically to keep up with the virus scanner). It might cause your hands to sweat a bit when its hot outside (or the room you're in is hot/not air-conditioned), but again, it doesn't get any hotter than any other laptop I've used.

I still haven't been able to receive a wireless signal. The router at home isn't working (for any laptop/wireless card) and there's no wireless network at the office. I'm planning to go out again today or tomorrow to see if I can pick up a publicly accessible wireless signal. I'm also going to try my D-Link DWL-122 to see what kind of reception I get (It can pick up a couple of access points a block away on my PowerBook) and how an exteral USB wireless adapter affects battery life.
