I purchased a Western Digital Passport external USB drive that's USB powered. I plugged it in to my 01+ and got no response. I can only think that the USB port is not putting out enough power. Has anyone else experienced this? I tried the HDD on a desktop and it worked fine. Is there anything I can do to bump up the power output of the USB port? I checked in the system files and it appears that the USB port is putting out a maximum of 500(mah?). Not sure what the requirements are of HDD. I hope this is not the case with my new 02 as well. Thanks for any help.

You are right. The USB port from the OQO 01+ does not supply enough power to the hard drive. I believe this will be the case for the OQO 02 as well. I can only use the USB flash drive with the OQO 01+.

You could buy a powered USB hub and that should allow the hard drive to work. Of course, it wouldn't be very portable, having to plug it in.

This issue has been discussed previously. If you can find it on this site someone has identified one or two external drives that operate from the OQO USB power. I use an external powered drive, that also runs on batteries. link

I bought a very small Apricorn EBM-60 60 Gb USB 2.0 hdd and it works great with the 01+.

I ended up purchasing an Apricorn Aegis Mini 60GB HDD, just like fil mentioned above. It works great just using the USB port power. Problem solved. I talked with a tech at Apricorn and he stated that most, if not all, 2.5'' USB HDD's require more than 500mah, which is the maximum output of the 01+ USB port. It seems there are only a few brands of USB HDD's that require less than 500mah, and they're all 1.8'' drives. Apricorn's line of Aegis Mini USB HDD's fit this category. I think Smartdisk's Firefly 20GB should also work. I'm not sure there are any 1.8'' drives that are larger than the Apricorn Aegis Mini 80GB, but this will change soon. Transcend also has a line that should also work. Thanks for all your input.

I have just got the OQO+1 from Espansys. Bargain price inc office £350.
Leica quality.
Anyway about USB drive:-
I have a LaCie 80GB pocket size drive. This works OK on just the USB powered port.
