There's an interesting, but short, article in this morning's "Tech Section" of the San Jose Mercury News. The article is about UMPC's and mentions the FlipStart, Samsung Q2, Sony & OQO. Not a very enlightening article for those of us that are regular forum readers/upmc owners. But, at least it's putting out some info for the general public.

One of the persons interviewed stated that the small keyboards can actually cause "injuries!" Umm, you FlipStart owners be careful now. Don't close your clamshell on your fingertip, might break a nail. Or, us OQO owners should likely wear hearing protection to circumvent the obvious hearing loss caused by the high-decibel noise of the fan!

The hard-copy article in the paper this morning featured a picture of the FlipStart being held by someone in both hands, the clamshell open and the screen on. It was kind of a cool picture. The online version did not have this picture.

Silly journalists, when will they learn?

Seriously though, many of the points are good ones (all be it that they have been covered here), and the article does illustrate well the difficulties of producing a really good UMPC or Handtop. It is possible that, as more tech journalists start paying attention to the hand top section of the market, there might be an upsurge in interest.

GD,

I like seeing articles such as this. If nothing else it might bring some much needed Public Relations to the UMPC market. The more units that are sold will help to bring down the costs for the rest of us. Also, as more units are sold the improvements might happen a little quicker. And if the buying public "demands" higher performance from the companies we all benefit.

With you all the way.

I thought it was a reasonable article, and it shows that some journalists are starting to take Handtops seriously, even though there are still misconceptions a plenty out there. But when journalists start taking the concept seriously, and looking at it from the perspective of the Handtop/UMPC user market, it can only be a good thing.

The only mag that consistently seems to get up my nose is PC Mag, with their bias towards desktop PC's and desktop replacement Laptops. Every article I have read from them about Handtops compares Handtops to Laptops, and then hammers Handtops on things like size of keyboard and screen etc. They don't seem to get it at all.

I think the "injuries" are stuff like carpal tunnel. Thumb typing, I know, bothers my wrists, and possibly extended cramped typing on small keyboards could cause similar problems.
