Thanks to my faceless friends here I stopped obsessing and ordered my OQO-2 today. I'm sure I'll find something else to obsess about soon enough, but for now...

I ordered Best with Vista Business with Verizon (I think Verizon has better coverage in my area.)
I went with Vista for the supposed better security and possible benefits from features like SmartFetch, ReadyBoost. I also did not relish the thought of deciding to upgrade to Vista with XP installed. OS upgrades are not always a fun way to sepnd more hours than you bargained for, not to mention the cost of the hair transplants once you've finished tearing out what was there. I am hoping that OQO will have ironed out the driver problems and done some suitable tweaking for me. I certainly considered XP, but decided to go with Vista.
I did not consider the Good or Better options. The little OQO was not meant for any attempt at hardware upgrades by a ham handed end user like me. I upgraded my HP 200LX myself, and though it was successful, I think it took several years off my life and left me with all grey hair. It is all too easy for me to imagine feeling that the smaller hard drive or lower RAM would be a limitation I would regret, so in spite of a sad goodbye for too many of my dollars, it had to be Best.

Considering how long folks have been waiting to get their OQO-2's, I'm looking forward to receiving mine just as soon as the Menlow UMPCs start arriving to make me regret my purchase.
...but like I said for now my mind is resting easy thanks to all you thoughtful folks.
Cheers.

Go for it man.

Congratulations on taking the plunge! Yeah, looking at the Shift made me wonder if I should have waited, but I'm real happy to have my OQO 02. Don't know if I will be able to resist the crop of 2008 machines if they're as good as projected...

Hi Kenrick,

Unless the larger keyboard is a criterion (which we know is the case for some people), the slower 1.2 GHz VIA C7M CPU would lead me to think long and hard about the Shift as it stands at present. By my calculations, that is going to be slower than the older Transmeta Crusoe CPU in the OQO Model 01/01+, and as such a tad too slow for my tastes.

Some of the upcoming UMPC's (if they ever get to market) look like very nice units indeed, particularly the little Fujitsu, if it is equipped with a decent CPU. That one might be on the radar, as might the Haier X6 UMPC (Dual core CPU).

One thing I have to say though, without being flamed I hope, is that size for performance the OQO is still looking good, and from a design point of view, the others have a way to go.

Hi ShivaFool,

Congratulations on the big step! Don't worry, we all wonder if we should have waited for the next big thing, but if you live like that, you are never going to buy anything at all.

The Fujitsu is a slightly bigger device than the OQO. The problem is at this point in time we haven't got a clear idea what the spec is of the Fuji or when it will be landing.

Hi GD,
From the Intel Forum, the Shift is based on the new Intel A110, not the VIA as initially reported. Not much faster than the VIA 1.5, but I still find the slide and twist design intriguing.

The Shift definitely had me interested, and yes I think it is confirmed now to have Intel Inside. Looks great, but I decided it was too big for me. I have the HTC Universal now, and it's a quality machine. It's drawbacks for me are related to Windows Mobile, not the machine itself.
The Fujitsu had me looking too, but when is it coming, what are the exact specs, and will it deliver on what seems very promising??
Except for BoyGenius' recent complaints about scratches, my impression is that those who have actually gotten their OQO's are very pleased. I decided I wanted to join that club.

I got lucky, didn't preorder and caught RCS at the right time. I am really enjoying the machine, looking forward to some accessories, extra battery etc. Upgraded to vista ultimate. a few nitpicks but I love it. Told Kenrick I accidently hit the power cable and the device hit the floor. left side screen holder, cracked around the screw. Not too bad, was able to piece it back together. I was so bummed. Unit seems fine, will probably order a spare part for the future. If the cord is loose, keep the screen closed is the morale of the story. I have had small form factor pc's since the sony u101, including the u50, ux50 and a slew of tablets. The oqo 02 has really gotten the ergonomics right. You will not be disappointed.

I thought about Vista Ultimate for the bitlocker hard drive encryption, but then I figured folder level encryption in the Business version is actually plenty for my needs. Psychoboogie (love the name) that sounds like a scary fall for your little friend. Maybe I'll super-glue mine to my hand when it comes.
Hi Kenrick,

The flea's of a thousand camels on journalists who publish incorrect....

A Shift with an Intel A110 is in the same performance category as the OQO Model 02. That moves it back onto the radar. This year is proving to be a strain on my resolve. We have gone from too few choices to too many.

ShivaFoot, I am still of the opinion that, as things stand at present, the OQO offers the best options in a small sized unit. Contrary to assertions elsewhere, I carry my Model 01+ around with me in a shirt pocket, but anything bigger would not work. I am waiting for built in HSDPA, and I will probably get one. The Fujitsu looks like a compelling package, but if it is much bigger... I also must say that the other manufacturers struggle to match the design and construction quality of OQO. We will see.

GreatDane,
The size is very important for me too. On another thread juantoad says "calculated the dimensions of the Fujitsu to be 6.6"L x 5"W with a 5.5" screen". For me the OQO is the only one small enough that I won't mind always having it on me.

Personally I'm willing to compromise a bit on size to get a mini touch type keyboard. But not as much as the HTC shift. I think the Fujitsu is a good compromise, but it is bigger than the OQO 02.

Hi scoobie,

I am hoping against hope, but the measurements of the Fujitsu as suggested above make it bigger than the Flipstart.

I think it will be bigger than the Flipstart - the keyboard looks bigger than the Flipstart.

I'm eagerly waiting for mine, and the reviews I've seen have so far been positive. I had an 01+ for about a year but grew increasingly frustrated at it's lack of performance for even basic tasks.

I also bought Best with Vista, but Vista will fly out the door immediately and I'll install XP Pro.. I selected Vista mainly because I think it'll raise the resell value when upgrade the next time, a year or two from now.
