Hi all, looks like Fujitsu will released the FMV-U8240 (codename: Vaio UX and Flipstart Killer) next month (June 2007), in three flavours according to the PC World Hands on. This little baby sports a 5.6-inch LCD at the same resolution as the Vaio UX but addresses two UX issues - Screen size and Keyboard usability.
They however managed to bungle one area. My question is, how do you make a 580gm, 171mm x 133mm x 32mm thick, Vista capable Intel GMA 950 graphics capable UMPC with 1GB RAM and 40GB HDD, a usable touch-typable keyboard, a potential Vaio UX AND Flipstart Killer, and leave out the Bluetooth?

Update:
I've added a size comparison to the Flipstart 1.0, OQO Model 02 and Vaio UX.

No Bluetooth. It may be a showstopper for some.

Dimensions according to the site = (converted to US) 6.73" X 5.24" X 1.26". Price = $1,197 for the base model. THAT's more like it!!!

Depends what you'll use it for. If you don't mind thumbing and want something to hide in a pocket, then stick with the OQO. But many users will have more robust uses for it - the complaints about the FS is that it's not very touch-typable unless you have tiny hands. There has to be something that works for these users.

Dude, this is less than an inch wider and less than an inch deeper than the Flipstart and thinner and lighter than the said Flipstart. Additionally, it does more, way more and has a much better design and battery life.
That's the positive, but since they have the same basic chip design, (the A110 is like the Flipstart's CPU - the Celeron version at a lower clock - Just so long as this isn't a repeat of the 600MHz SpeedStep situation like the Vaio VGN-U101 of years gone, so far as performance goes) the lack of Bluetooth may not be unforgivable since they have provided a CF and SD slot and swivel and touch screen with most importantly, a useable keyboard.
Overall, at USD1,358.16 for the full version with 1GB, I'd buy this over the UX and the Flipstart and just upgrade the 20GB HDD to a Samsung 64GB SSD.
So, the only thing left to say is: When will Dynamism ship?

This indeed looks like a Flipstart killer to me. Why would anyone get the Flipstart instead of this? The small difference in size isn't worth the trade off in my mind. Fujitsu has always been strange about bluetooth. They didn't originally make it available for the P-series line of ultra mobile PC's and even now that it's available, they don't pre-install the driver, including it on a CD AND it's not available for download on their web site. If you lose the CD and want to reinstall, it's tough luck for you. They must have some sort of licensing issue or large expense that it doesn't seem others have.

The keyboard on the flipstart is very usable and the backlight is great. FS has a touchpad (a big plus for a hand top). Since I am a huge fan of built-in EVDO modem (EVDO coverage is more widespread than HSDPA) I don't mind paying more for the flipstart (I know 700 bucks more is kind of high but at least I don't have to carry an extra Treo phone to use it as bluetooth DUN). I wonder if the screen on this new Fujitsu unit is a touchscreen type?

The FMV-U8240 has one too... it's about 5.6-inches in size, in case you run out of room... (lol)

700 bucks to avoid carrying a USB dongle or a CF+ card???
That's some pretty expensive weight savings

I just ordered the Flipstart tonight. There are some posts here about how the Fujitsu is less than an inch wider and less than an inch deeper than the Flipstart. I made cardboard cutouts of each. I grant you that the Flipstart is BARELY pocketable and too heavy for many to feel comfortable carrying around in a pocket. But I challenge you to do make a carboard cutout the dmensions of the Fujitsu and fit it in anything but a VERY large jacket pocket (barely squeezes into most of my sport coats and I am 6'2", did not fit into some sport coats- and I want to be able to put it into a pants pocket).
I DON'T SEE HOW THE FUJITSU, NOT BEING POCKETABLE, IS A FLIPSTART KILLER IN THE POCKETABLE COMPUTER SEGMENT.
If one wanted to emphasize the Fujitsu as a flipstart killer, don't talk about the size (which is a huge downside to the Fujitsu in my book), talk about the weight (most people don't want to carry as much weight as the flipstart in their pocket).
For me, the fujitsu is not a flipstart killer. And I suspect that given the chance to own and use one, many would be disappointed at the lack of pocketability of the Fujitsu. What I want has not yet come to market: a pocketable clamshell 6.5x4 inch with a keyboard and touchscreen like the new Fujitsu, but a screen that is 1280x720 and 6.5 inches or so. That kind of screen size is possible in a 6.5x4inch device. It is inevitable that it will come. There is no other logical conclusion about the device and screen size, because many people will want the biggest screen and keyboard size in a device they can still fit in their pocket. I am pretty surprised that no manufacturer has been able to see this yet.

So what's the big draw to this handtop?
The Sony U101 specs are almost the same:
Dimanesions- 178 x 34 x 139mm
Weight: 880g
Mobile 600MHz Intel Celeron (performance is pretty good on these)
And this thing was a PITA to touchtype on.

I see it as a competitor. IT has no Bluetooth, and built in EV-DO. I would rather have a touchpad over a touchscreen. I am uncertain one can touchtype on either effectively.

Typing ths on a flipstart over my EVDO Rev A connection. As a happy owner of a Fujitsu P1610 I have to confess that I was initially interested in the new unit. However, the size (same screen as Flipstart but wider and deeper body) makes me less interested.
The unit is too wide to thumb type for most people (Flipstart is good but still almost too wide). Yet the keyboard looks to be the same size or smaller than the Toshiba Libretto U105 which I learned was too small to touch type effectively.
No BT and no embedded WAN module plus the slow cpu makes just not right for me.
I have been pleasantly surprised by the Flipstart. Even with only 512MB they did a great job of tuning the deisgn and OS installation. Apps pop on this box - it feels faster than it's specs would lead you to believe. And add the EVDO Rev A and a good thumb board and there is really nothing like it out there.

juantoad,
With the slimline battery, the FlipStart fits nicely in your average pants pocket (a bit of a bulge, but not extreme). Although the weight is about half a pound from the extended battery to the slimline, it seems alot lighter on the pocket, and the bulge with the extended battery is too much. I took mine to a conference that was way out in the sticks, and although I only had two bars, I never had problems with the connection, and few people there knew I had it with me (we were told to leave our laptops and blackberries at the office). It's a great device, but I do think the keyboard seems a bit better on the Fujitsu. Six- eight months from now I may have enough cash saved to pick one up and add to my growing collectiion of mini laptops!
