Why is the fan running when the FS is on standby? I also shut it down and the fan still ran until I unplugged the power cord and replugged it in.

The fan should not run when the Flipstart is on standby or power down. The fan in my flipstart stop running when it is on standby. However it does run with a solid state drive when it cannot wake up from standby. The screen is totally dark with no response except for the fan noise. I believe that your flipstart is not on standby or shutdown for some reason. You should check with technical help from Flipstart.

I will have to do that for the fan and a few other quirks.

The FlipStart's fan is running in standby because it isn't in standby. You've probably got it set to sync the InfoPane, so the device is coming out of standby, attempting to collect new emails, update InfoPane, then return to standby.

suspend to standby/hibernate isn't always reliable for me.
Maybe 15% of the time, it only gets about halfway into suspension and hangs-
black screen, fan and disk running, totally unresponsive save for hard-powerdown.

About the only oddity is, it doesn't seem to drain the battery much while stuck in this space.
(using XP, current drivers/patches).
