Let's face it, the launch of the first UMPCs did not meet the hype. According to a recent eWeek Channel Insider article ( link ), Microsoft, Intel, Via, and several new OEMs are targeting more hardware choices with this platform this coming holiday season. We should be seeing cheaper prices, design options such as integrated keyboards and thumboards, a new set of use models focused at women, teenagers, and business-class users, cheaper pricing between $500-$1000, built-in wireless wide area networking, and increased battery life.
What was most interesting to me was the final sentences:
The software giant is also already working with one smaller follow-on platform under a project it calls "Haiku."
Although there's no specific Haiku launch date set, the company is using it to lay out the road map to smaller UMPCs, Kramer said.
This indicates Microsoft's willingness to compete against the Sony UX microPC and OQO.
