Hi all,
I come bearing the gift of news.

First off this processor is the AMD Geode LX800, so clocked at 500MHz its not going to outperform the Core Solo in the UX at the big crunch but while running at room temperature and not giving off anymore heat than the CPU in you PDA, it will outperform the Crusoe in the OQO 01/01+. Out performance at half the clock speed! This is like a comparison between a 500MHz PowerPC G5 and a 1GHz Pentium III, except in this case they are both x86. Bottom line is, AMD knows what they are doing.

Read all about it here and here.

The Geode for quite some time has employed power saving technologies such as the ability to shut down the parts of the CPU that are not in use, saving much energy. In comparison, Intel only just learned that trick and has just started to employ it in the Core2Duo.

For those who haven't yet realized it, the Intel strategy has been for quite sometime, to employ strict contract terms with the major PC brands forbidding them use of anything other than Intel processors. Additionally, they have been playing the Clock Speed game for many years as a method to disguise their ineptitude in the CPU design arena as they continued to regurgitate the old technology of the original Pentium Processor many generations later even up to today's Core Solo and Core Duo. AMD however, (being founded by the original Intel Engineers who designed the Pentium anyway) has shown innovation for generations of processors and it is a great day now that an AMD processor finally appears in a Handtop. The era of the x86 handtop has officially begun!

That said, here is a (rather inflated but a review nonetheless) review of the VEGA and I think it's worth the USD700.00 price point.

We should see these from Dynamism soon and for those who want more details on the units, here is the homepage in English and details in English.

One note though, it doesn't seem to come with built-in Wi-fi but does include USB Wi-fi dongle in the package. They claim space constraints but I have a Nexio XP30 that has the same footprint and is 13mm thick that includes wifi, dunno what that Vega has inside there.

My $0.02,

I wonder what other devices will use this processor?

Well, it looks making a decision for a umpc is getting harder each day. Sony seems to have advantages such as a very usefull keyboard, two digital cameras, integrated bluetooth and wifi, way better CPU and ram. While Raon seems to offer a reasonable price (there are roumors that its going to be priced at 700 USD) , lighter weight option (with low capacity battery its just 350 Gr)

I dont think there is a much difference in battery life between Core Solo and AMD cpu's as UMPS consists of a lot of other compenents then the CPU. And CPU power consumption is only %10 of the total power.

Well, as AMD is providing ready to go modules, a lot of other vendors will provide UMPS and thats just good news.

The review on gadgetkorea seems quit suspect. *Raises eyebrow*

honestly, at $700 i'm not sure i even have the right to complain. at this price it becomes damn near disposable. i would certainly take it over a highend PDA.

i dont think ive ever seen someone offer a standard & compact battery, it's always standard & extended. with the compact battery it comes in at barely 3/4 lb, pretty impressive. even if it does only get 2 hours battery with that option, it would be fine if ur just running up to the grocery store, fast food, etc & want something lighter to carry along. u could always pop the standard battery back in for normal use.

Where did you get that surprising information?? It's chronologically impossible!!!

AMD existed a LONG time before Intel designed the Pentium. Before the Pentium was the 486, before that was the 386 and AMD made a bunch of 386 compatible CPUs. Before that they made 287 FPUs (286 arithmetic co-processors) and before that (or around that time) they made laser printer CPUs (at a time PostScript laser printers were "computers" of their own and included a CPU, RAM and some even had HDDs; Adobe PDF language is a derivative from their PostScript language BTW).

All this to certify that AMD could NOT have been founded by engineers who designed the Pentium; at most some (key) engineers who worked on the Pentium may have left Intel to join AMD but in no way founded it!!!

Again it's chronologically impossible!!
