Samsung SPH-P9000 Deluxe MITs

Ultra-portable XP devices have been getting a whole lot of interesting lately. Now Samsung just upped the ante with this -- the SPH-P9000 Deluxe MITs -- at the Mobile WiMax Summit 2006 in South Korea. Measuring in at chubby 143 × 94.3 × 29.75-mm / 580-g (5.6 × 3.7 × 1.17-inches / 1.28-pounds) when folded, this Windows XP device unfolds (dare we say) origami-like to reveal a 1GHz Transmeta CPU and both Mobile WiMAX (AKA, WiBro which is already launched in Korea) and EV-DO for data connectivity. No WiFi apparently, this all about Mobile WiMAX kids, with Internet speeds of 2-3 Mbps even when travelling up 120-KPH (75-MPH). The SPH-P9000 packs a 5-inch 854x480 (WVGA) LCD, 30GB disk, 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and apparently ships with both an internal 2980mAh and 7200mAh external extended-battery. People who have played with a prototype on display at the show complained about the screen being too small (in DMB-cellphone crazed Korea!?) and of excessive heating. Well, they can at least work on the latter before the scheduled Korean launch in the first half of 2007. No pricing yet but we've got plenty more pics after the break.

OK, I've been lurking...why haven't any of you posted this?

This Handtop is sweet running XP and sporting a similar size as the DualCor at 5.6 × 3.7 × 1.17-inches.

One issue is the Origami-like keyboard.

I own a Nokia 6820i and the folding thumboard is not comfortable and does not allow quick thumb entry because of the split thumboard.

This keyboard looks doable, but suspect.

The other issue is Transmeta.

Why?

A folding or rollout monitor would probably make this device more useful than a full [foldout] keyboard.

My problem with the OQO is when I'm home in front of the TV or in the Office when I don't want to plug the OQO into a monitor. A fold out or a flexible display (like this link ) that can roll out would suit my needs.

uhm.... perhaps because its not a handtop?......try typing on this while holding it in your hand

I call this a handtop and I WILL buy one if Samsung changes the following before shipping the units next year.

-Add a Touch Screen

-Allow additional Swivel on the keyboard at the point where it folds so the half that is not connected to the display can be swivelled and folded again to be placed behind the other half and the display. This will allow Tablet orientation of the system

-Create two models, and use AMD Geode LX800 processor for an entry level version and a AMD Geode NX or Intel Core Solo processor for a performance version

-Include Wifi

-Use a Solid State HDD on the performance version (32/64GB)

-No less than 512MB DDR memory. Performance system with 1GB

-3MPixel Camera not 1.3MPixel

-Wireless USB

-Make usable as USB Mass Storage Device when powered down

-External Display Support

Otherwise this is the most innovative design I have seen since the OQO was first announced and demoed in 2002.

My $0.02,

diJenerate - Innovative - yes.
I would consider the device you describe, but not the one demo'ed.

Despite the lack of information on the device, I suspect it is a touchscreen, because it's designated a Windows XP device, and there are no pictures indicating any kind of pointing device, trackstick or touchpad. The only conclusion I can come up with is it's a touch screen, though I could be mistaken.

I dig the form factor, but not the processor, nor lack of WIFI
We are not fortunate to have internet connections as the Korean

(My Korean friend told me that they only have one type of broad band which is Fiber Op with 100MB/s Up and Down)

I think is a very promising product! The key is the keyboard. If it is a decent touch type keyboard then I would say this is the perfect device even without wifi (which might be an optional ad via some card?). What I hate about OQO, the sony umpc, and all others is the lack of a touch type keyboard. I will NOT buy any thumb device ever!!!!! As long as they fix the heating up issues and the computer performance is decent I would be ready to buy one right now as there are no mobile pocket size devices with a true touch type keyboard at any price. Having a foldable keyboard etc. is just lame as they are so large.
