Earlier this week, I went on a business trip from New York to Tijuana Mexico with my only tech being my OQO and a cell phone. My primary mission was to provide training for my company's motion control equipment. I used a USB keyboard and mouse for text entry and displayed the course materials (PDFs, photos, PowerPoint, etc) using a video projector and the mini video adapter. A USB to serial adapter gave me the necessary communications to my company's product. I had to write small sections of code, but this was not a problem with the external keyboard (shipped earlier).

This is the first time I've left my laptop home. I've been on several other trips where the laptop was not taken out of my briefcase, but it was there for backup if I found the OQO was not sufficient for the task. No safety net for me this time.

I had no problems with the OQO and the customers were impressed that so much could be done in such a small package. I did run into a few nuisance problems: I had to take the OQO out of the Stronghold case to plug in the video adapter and when using the projector, the OQO's display could not be used simultaneously. Trivial, I know, but worthy of comment. A backlit keyboard would have also been welcomed. In the hotel, I had some trouble staying connected to their WiFi until I learned that they used a single directional antenna on each side of the building to blanket signal through the windows. Once I moved closer to the external walls, I was able to stay connected. A little more WiFi sensitivity would have been advantageous. Scrolling PDF documents with an external scroll mouse seemed a bit slow at times, but I suspect the extra memory of an 01+ would have made a big difference.

For entertainment in transit, I used a custom made bracket to suspend the OQO from the small hook on the plastic tray table retainer, watching past episodes of "Lost," "The Simpsons" and "Heroes." One of the flight attendants commented, "Now that's the way to travel.' I could not agree more. It dawned on me that I was probably the only person on the plane still able to watch my media (the in-flight movie was lame) while the tray table was filled infamous snack box goodies.

Using a Bluetooth GPS receiver, I was able to navigate to my destination in San Diego easily. I just wish I had GPS maps for Mexico. It would have made driving there much less stressful. Interestingly, I was able to use the GPS as an indicator of how far away from the boarder I was during my four-hour wait to cross the boarder. 2500 feet, four hours. You do the math.

I can't tell you what a pleasure it was to not have to lug around 10 pounds of laptop. With just the OQO, my entire briefcase only weighed 9.4 pounds, including the OQO, power supply, cables, lots of USB adaptors, an aluminum "portable desk," and paperwork. In fact, I didn't even take the OQO out going through security. They just assumed it was a PDA. Security was much more interested un a USB key that looked like a lighter through the x-ray. On trips like this in the future, I might be able to leave the briefcase home and switch to a "man bag" if I can find one that suits my tastes. It's amazing that technology has come so far that I can literally carry all of the equipment needed to service a multi-million dollar production machine in my pockets.

Will I do it again. Yes, I think so. The reliability issues I've experienced now appear to be part of the past. I certainly would not want to write massive amounts of code without an external keyboard and mouse, but I'm growing much more confident that the OQO can really replace my laptop.

Can you give us the details on your "custom made bracket to suspend the OQO from the small hook on the plastic tray table retainer" - sounds like a neat accessory!

Great report!

One thing that I've noticed while travelling is the screen size while in the hotel room--it's too small.
While in a car, waiting in a line, or while out and about, the screen size is acceptable, but I find myself switching to one of my subnotebooks when I'm surfing while watching TV or I find myself connecting the OQO to an LCD while at work or in my home office.

Being in a hotel room is like being in a home office and, frankly, I need a bigger screen to do my work, plain and simple.

While in the hotel room, it is annoying after a while to do work on a 5" 800x480 screen. I carry a folding USB keyboard and a USB mouse to have the full desktop experience, but I can't carry an LCD with me. I feel a little robbed with the external keyboard and mouse and no LCD.

Another good point about carrying the OQO solo is the fact that I can stuff the OQO in my pocket and check all of my bags or place my bags under the seat or in the overhead and never have to fight the cramped seats in coach to get out my laptop.

I also agree that OQO should have written dual-display drivers so that the VGA adapter could display on the OQO screen as well as the external display. It's just standard practice that even the Sony U/UX support, so OQO is just being lazy not to include it.

I've overcome the weak Wifi by (a) using the infamous bare wire trick with the 01 and (b) bringing a USB Ethernet adapter and retractable Ethernet cable in my travel bag (hardwire).

Cheers.

You are showing the customers outdated technololgy though.

Now you have to go back so show them what todays new tech provides when the Model 02 comes out.

Congratulations - great post.

What GPS software do you use on the OQO..? I have so far only used PDA GPS software.?

Bo

I've used the DeLorme GPS and software bundle . . . it works great!

fil - i'm pretty sure there are a few smallish lcd's available... About 7" or so which have a VGA connection, they're meant for cars or whatever but a lot of them are quite tiny and i suppose if you're carrying a briefcase you could probably add that to it without too much of a problem.

I don't know if that particular solution is appropriate for you though.

illucid what would really be awesome is to use the 7in lcd as a second monitor or extension to the main. That right there could really help me out. Problem i suppose would be power source alone.

vadsoom great report. It is always nice to hear someone was able to use their oqo in a way that makes it worth while to have. I currently don't have an oqo, but when the 02 comes out, I am onboard, I really have said I don't care about specs, I just miss the thing so much.

As requested, here are photos of the custom bracket....

Bo,
I'm using MS Streets and trips for the POIs and Iguidance for navigation. Hardware wise, I use a Deluo Bluetooth receiver that runs on AAA batteries.

Thanks for the pics - neat idea. Looks like you can use it on your belt, too?

fil, is it really fair to say...

I also agree that OQO should have written dual-display drivers so that the VGA adapter could display on the OQO screen as well as the external display. It's just standard practice that even the Sony U/UX support, so OQO is just being lazy not to include it.

?

the SMI chip that OQO uses probably doesn't support dual display. i don't think its fair to call OQO "lazy". the vast majority of hardware makers don't write or maintain their own drivers and rely on their vendors to do that. that's not to say they don't modify them.

@nivenh
Lazy was a strong statement. I'll use "non-standard" missing feature of dual display.
The only notebook that I've ever used that did not support dual display is the OQO.

@illucid
For road trips, I only carry a small travel planner that is 6" x 4" x 3" (that cannot fit a 7" LCD) that has the following stuffed in it:
- Fellowes folding USB keyboard
- USB mini optical mouse
- Tiny 4-port USB port replicator
- Flexible Qsee webcam
- USB thumb drive

The theory here is that this kit stays in my luggage and I only pull it out in the hotel room.

Good idea. I'll think about another similar solution.

I also now only take my OQO as my primary computer. The only issue I had was a power supply that faulted, but OQO came to the rescue very promptly. Only using one computer is so convenient. No swapping and transferring files as you move from one to the other. Its also great to go to an internet cafe with your own computer for banking and passwords. I have also made a small metal pocket on the back of my battery that allows me to keep with me a small 1G USB SD card, basically the smallest USB key. I can now transfer any files from the OQO to any other computer.
