I've had my Sony UX280 for a few weeks now and things seem to be going very well with it so far. I purchased a 4GB Sony Memory Stick and an external FireWire DVD/CD drive with the computer.

I use a KVM switch (shared between a desktop and the XU280) for my serious typing and for the transfer of documents. This setup works extremely well with the port replicator.

Now that I'm really starting to use the UX280 I figured I should to back it up to DVDs.. Does anyone have any recommendations for backup software? Ghost 2003 doesn't work with the external FireWire drive and only crippled or lousy backup software came with the computer. I guess you can't have everything.

Speaking of wanting everything, I wonder why it only has one Shift key on the left side of the keyboard?

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

You can visit link and see if you can create/burn a DOS networking boot floppy/CD. Once booted you just make a *wired* network connection between the UX and your desktop PC and run DOS version of Ghost to backup the HD image as a .GHO file over a network-mapped drive on your desktop PC.

I use an USB external drive for this, the 2.5" iomega. It comes with a CD that permits you to make an image of your disk. Should you need to do so, you can also institute incremental backups to this image etc. It can be scheduled for the middle of the night, or some other convenient time. Since the HDD in the iomega drive is a standard 2.5", you can select the capacity you need, and also use the drive as an external drive at the same time. If you need to restore the drive, simply boot of the iomega cd, and then select the image to restore.

I know that these drives also come in 3.5" and 1.8" variants, although I have not tried either. I have successfully restored the drive on my HP nw8000 from the image, after a catastrophic failure. It worked like a charm, and was fast.

I need to use an external power supply to the drive if I use it on the OQO, the USB port does not seem to supply sufficient power. I have no idea if this will be the same on the UX.

I am also sure that the software on the CD will permit backup and restore from a network drive, although I am not sure as to whether the CD supports the network card or not.

Hope this is of some help.
Recent Blog: Performance Capped

I ended up exchanging the Firewire drive for a good old-fashioned USB external CD/DVD drive. I also updated my version of Ghost to 2006. The USB drive is much less quirkier than the fancy new Firewire optical DVD drive. Thanks for the comments...
