thread starter

I decided that this should probably get its own thread. It's quite long, but I hope worth the read. Just treat it like a poorly written/edited article by some nobody.

--------

PREFACE

So, as I mentioned on another thread I had the amazing opportunity to meet Steven Hanley, President and CEO of DualCor today at CES. Even cooler, I got a chance to hold the CPC in my own mitts!

I wasn't sure where to put this since it could go on any of the various CPC threads or on the CES one. I guess if somebody in admin. wants to move it somewhere else they shall.

I'm afraid this is going to be pretty long, but I want to give you as much information as I can about this serendipitous encounter. I mean, the timing is amazing since we were just ranting about this product earlier today and most people felt like DualCor wouldn’t show up at CES. Anyway, PLEASE READ/SKIM through the whole thing because I think you'll find the information, at least some of it, interesting. As you can see, I tried to add some headings to make it easier to follow or skip.

MEETING STEVE HANLEY

As I was leaving the South Hall of exhibits at around 3 o'clock (Vega$ time) today, I came upon the C|Net booth and was shocked to see that the next presentation was going to be about DualCor. So I grabbed a seat in the nearly empty pavilion/show area and waited. As it turns out, they were recording their “first look” at the DualCor which you can now find here link . As you'll note by the editor's opening PSP joke, I'm not the only one who sees a fat PSP when I look at this thing.

So, when the review is over and the camera goes off, I'm watching the editor, Tom Merritt, like a hawk to see where he goes with that cPC when he's done. As I'm looking around I see a guy in a white button-down shirt that has DualCor embroidered on it. I also noticed that he has a cPC in his hand, so I walk up and ask him coyly, "Are you with DualCor?” He says, "Yeah, I'm Steven Hanley, the President and CEO." I'm thinking to myself, holy snikeys! I'm feeling like just like Cartman in the South Park movie (“Yes, I saw the Terrence and Philip movie-- who wants to touch me?”)

DISCUSSION ABOUT THE OQO AND cPC

I was so intently focused on how I was going to get my hands on that cPC, that I didn't realize that I had my OQO in one hand when I was shaking Mr. Hanley's hand with the other. He noticed though! Unlike the guy who asked me if my OQO was a telephone, Mr. Hanley immediately knew what it was and he said to me, and I quote, "Oh, you've got a toy there.” I laughed and told him that that was funny because we were just having this discussion on handtops.com this morning.

Surprisingly, he seemed to be familiar with the site and some of the criticisms that were on the board. "They just don't know enough about the product yet," he said. I laid out some of the specific questions/criticisms for him including; isn't it just vaporware, does it have Bluetooth, will it come with a keyboard, etc. [I certainly did not mention that I thought it was “fugly.”] But, before he answered those, or any, questions he had a specific agenda item that he wanted to address. He was accompanied by a woman by the date of Elizabeth Dumm who is an account director with a company called Brodeur. I'm not sure of what their relationship is and did not ask, they may have something to do with distribution. I suppose anyone who's interested can google it. Anyhow, he called her over and also called over the CNet editor, Tom, to take a look at my OQO.

Specifically, he wanted to point out how much brighter the screen on his cPC was when compared side-by-side to the OQO. No joke, it seems almost twice as bright. This was magnified by the fact that I had my 01+ on a lower brightness setting to try and conserve battery life. When I brightened it, it was like taking the lampshade off of a 10 watt bulb, it just wasn't impressive. “It's not even close, like night and day,” said Mr. Hanley. He was very satisfied with this demonstration.

They actually had to cPC's on hand. Mr. Hanley had one, and Tom used a different one for the review. After getting back the demonstration cPC from the CNet editor, Mr. Hanley (who I shall now refer to as Steve, since we're old friends by now), placed one in my hands. As he did he said, “this one has been on all day so it's a little warm.” I can tell you that he must've been being facetious, because it was lukewarm. I mean, my OQO is only that cool when it’s turned off. Also, I must say, it really doesn't look ‘as fugly’ in person as it does in the pictures. It looks just like a super fat PSP.

There is one thing that just can’t be denied though, IT IS HEAVY. I either made a face, or said something out loud like “boy this thing is solid,” because Steve said, “yeah, it weighs 1 pound.” So, there's one for you folks straight from the horse’s mouth, it weighs 1 pound. That's a pretty hefty handheld device.

PERSONAL DEMONSTRATION

He then recaptured the unit to show me some pretty cool stuff. One thing you can't see in any of the pictures, but should see in the video that I linked above is that the power button emits a cobalt blue glow. I don't know if that's cool or not, I suppose some folks will like it and others will not.

Steve then personally demonstrated much of what you saw in the video for me. He clicked on the ying-yang icon switching back and forth from Windows to Windows Mobile a couple times. I can tell you that switching back and forth was pretty much instantaneous.

He then did some doodling showing off the tablet functions. He also showed me that he can do all that stuff with a fingertip. As he did, he commented on how he thought the timing of OQO coming out with a tablet PC version was, in his words, “interesting.” He clearly has his eye on OQO and is watching every move they make. As you would expect.

I let him know that I wasn't happy about this option not being available to me since I had just purchased my 01+. His reply was something to the effect of…well I guess that's good customer service these days.

PROCESSOR/SPEED

Steve then proceeded with the demonstration. He really wanted to show me that is a VIA C7-M processor was superior. He chose to demonstrate this by opening a PowerPoint presentation which he told me had over a thousand slides in it. It basically popped up instantly. He then clicked on something that brought up a pop-up which had radio buttons to select a processor speed. As he did, he explain to me that the unit was only operating at that point at 400 MHz, but that it could be scaled up using this screen to as high as 1.5 GHz. I saw the screen and radio buttons, so it’s true as far as I know. I'm sure some of you more technical guys will get out there and start dissecting this information.

After that, we chatted a little bit more and I was surprised at how much awareness he had of the various criticisms that had been hurled his direction. He specifically commented about people complaining about the renderings seen on his site and elsewhere and citing them as proof that the product was only vaporware. I mean, with as much information as he had about what's going on on this and other sites is not unreasonable to suspect that he might be posting here or there himself.

He also noted that their web site had just recently been updated and a lot of the questions people had should now be answered. Finally, he told me that there was going to be a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT on his web site in March. He didn't provide any other detail, but I have to assume this is more than the release since he must know that I would be aware of that basic information.

Anyways, after that he gave me his business card and a strange double-sided laminated card which I believe is supposed to be a life-sized representation of the cPC. I will scan and post it here when I have a chance so that you guys can see it. It has some specs listed on it and basically has a picture of rendered face of the CPC on both sides one side highlighting Windows functions and the other side highlighting Windows Mobile. The card looks like a prototype for something that might be using future marketing campaigns.

So there you have it; no press pass, no secret handshake, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time to due to sheer happenstance and dumb luck, I managed to get my hands on the cPC and meet the CEO of DualCor too.

YOUR QUESTIONS:

Here are the questions that I can answer based on my encounter:

1) Wi-Fi?

Yes.

2) BT?

Yes.

3) GPRS? EDGE? EDVO?

3G.

4) a. How do you attach a BT Keyboard to this thing when you're in an airplane at 38,000 ft?

I think that's rhetorical and anyway I can’t answer it.

b. Will I have to bring and use my own USB keyboard?

I asked if it will ship with a keyboard and Steve said yes. I was not quick enough on my feet to think to ask him what kind.

Our whole encounter lasted about 15 minutes, so cut me some slack!

WHAT I’VE LEARNED/DECIDED

I think that the cPC is going to be very interesting. Unfortunately, it weighs a full pound and is about the size of a brick. I just don't think it's very portable. And I absolutely could not see myself carrying it around to use as either a phone or a handtop. Ultimately, I think my snap judgment was dead on. It's specs are pretty awesome. But I think you’d have to be pretty dorky to carry this around.

I really liked Mr. Hanley though. I'm guessing he's about mid-40s to early 50s. Personable and passionate about his creation. I hope it does well.

Excellent post. Thanks.

As for customer service...I did send my 01+ back to them on Tuesday (overnight, they received it Weds) to have them replace the outside assembly case for me (cosmetic damage...argh)...and I had it back Friday morning. Pretty quick turnaround.

Thanks for that review... very informative.

I wonder which one, cPC or OQO has more performance per size/weight.

To make a device smaller is exponentially more difficult. OQO has a number of innovative patents to make their device so small.

Comment on screen. I think it is relative. In sunlight the OQO works wonders in any other situation it is still very usable. Better is better but is it really necessary.

I like the competition/discussion this product is arousing... keeps all players on their toes.

mensrea,
Thanks for the post and asking the questions. There will be plenty more from other posters I'm sure. I hope the DualCor pushes technology forward, from what I've read, this machine is not for me either. I already have an imate JasJar as my phone/PDA (use it all the time) and do not need to replace it. The JasJar is almost a "brick" in my view...... so I think the DualCor will be too big to lug around for an evening out on the town. I'll continue to watch the posts on the DualCor and see what people have to say once they have one in their hands. That's interesting the hear about a "scaleable" processor. Will the Via C7-M processor scale itself automatically? Or do you have to scale the processor speed manually?

Pretty much mirrors everything that I've said above, only he explains why all I could tell you about the phone was that it would be "3G." We both agree that the cPC is lightning fast. It's very impressive in that regard. My 01+ stutters quite a bit. Ultimately, the only difference is that JK concludes that he wants one, and I just can't see this thing fitting in to my daily routine. Its too big, too heavy, and the built in keyboard is critical for the way I use my handtop.

"It's like that, and that's the way it is."

MOVED to DualCore forum...

mensrea,

Thanks for sharing your meeting details with us!

I wish you had a Sony U as well since its XBrite screen is a lot brighter than the OQO's screen.

I wish you pressed him about an integrated thumboard. Like you, the missing thumboard is a big design flaw for me also.

Did you ask about battery life?

I'm glad that the Via processor is fast. The cPC seems to be the first device running the new Via C7-M processor. I hope Via doesn't have the same performance issues that surfaced when the Transmeta first launched several years ago.

I'm glad you folks appreciated the effort. I was happy to do it.

I have Mr. Hanley's e-mail address and cell phone # from his business card. I suppose that if you folks want to compile a list of questions, I could send him an e-mail and if he responds I could post it here. I would not be comfortable giving the e-mail address or numbers out since I don't know if that info is public.

I say let's compile a concise list of queries and see if we can get a response. Let's make sure that the answers are not already available on the dualcor website or somewhere else in the public domain, though. I wouldn't want to misuse the access with tedious questions. CEO's don't like that.

I think the 'How do you get programs onto the windows mobile side?' is a really good one. It would suck if you had to install individual .cab and other files every time you wanted to install a new PPC program.

mensrea,

I can't believe how lucky you were to score some one-on-one time with The Man. Thanks for your write-up.

Aside from the questions about the cPC itself, my question would be: how involved with his product did this fellow seem to be? Was that his personal cPC that you got to handle? Did he seem protective when he let it out of his hands? Has he been eating, sleeping, and drinking cPC for the last three years? Was he a soldier in the trenches with some dirt under his nails?

Will cPC owners be part of the family or will they just be paying for someone's next golf outing?

I think early adopters want to feel like they're part of the family, that someone is listening to their feedback, and that they'll be taken care of. Did you get that family feeling from this fellow?
Recent Blog: Travelling With the OQO

mensrea,

No order here, but my questions for DualCore (posted similar questions to jk):
- Will there possibly be a version of the cPC that has an integrated thumboard (just site the failure of the Sony U without it)?
- The PIM sync issue.
- Is battery life truly 3 hours?
- Will there be an extended battery?
- The touchscreen was a passive digitizer? If so, did it have a floating TIP?
- How did they keep the price so low even with Tablet OS?
- Will the cellular card be swappable?
- If cellularis modular, if they don't have it available at launch can a modular cellular card be purchased afterwards and used in the cPC?
- Are there real performance benchmarks similar to the Ultranote benchmarks available for the Via C7-M processor in the cPC? This device appears to the first device sporting this processor.

Thank you for making the effort to get us good information.

mensrea,

some questions for DualCore,

what is the type B USB plug intended for ?
Does it have a fan inside cooling the C7-M processor ?
What size (physical) is the HDD ? (1.8" 5mm or 8mm or as some have said maybe 2.5" (when is the world going to standardise on metric ;)
Where will it be manufactured ?

Wow great post. I am relatively new to the whole Handtop thing. I am going to be purchasing my Oqo in Feb hopefully. I actually emailed Oqo concerning their choice of processor.

For those of you wondering if the C7-m is faster.. the answer is yes. I would in terms of current benchmarks on both products, the C7-m is almost 600% faster. The TM5800 has been burdened by many things. Mainly a small PCI architecture, which has a nasty nack of bottlenecking info to the CPU. (which explains why the multi-tasking lags the OQO so much) It also does not support a AGP architecture, nor SSE or SSE2.

The advantage that the TM5800 has over the C&-m is power consumption. TM5800 uses around 6-8W, while the C7-m at full power uses 11W. However with the Powersave option it will consume on the norm 1-2W. This would explain the lengthy battery time on the device.

If you google TM5800 benchmark you will find a very good article from I think VAN's Hardware that detail very very specifically the up and downs of it.

WIth this being said, it might seem that I am bashing the Oqo. I am not.

While yes the cpc weighs a whooping 1lbs. (sarcastic) the oqo weighs only 2 ounces less than that. (14 ounces)

There were some concerns as well on how the cPC would be able to sync programs to itself for the PDA side of the house. That is a very uncomplicated solution. There will probably be software that is run during XP use that will install and remove things from the PDA side. Theoretically it makes perfect sense that a device sharing all the same resources would be aware of what is being used and thus installed on them.

I can almost predict this is how it will work. It is not a huge flaw as was posted else were.

With all this being said the TM8000 is due in the early part of this year. Its arrival will address many shortcomings. However it is almost 200% bigger than the TM8000. Becuase of this it will require more juice.

My question to Oqo is why don't they use the C7-m. It is obvouisly the superior canidate. Until that is both companies drop their new products.

All this aside, the Oqo, is simply a better looking device. More pratical as well. I don't see why if you can run XP you would want a PDA enviroment as well. Thats like buying a car, and then buying another one for when you want to go slower.

The fact that it is a cell phone is nice, but not really appealing. I mean you can already use this tiny little bluetooth enabled phone to get internet access anywhere with the oqo. Becuase its bluetooth, you can leave the phone in your pocket or backpack.

The keyboard is built into the Oqo which is really the best part about it. You seriously have a 100% complete computer with you were ever you go. In the future I see Oqo upgrading its CPU.

While the cPC might be a superior device in terms of benchmarks. They both are essentially the same device.

The reason why I prefer the Oqo is becuase it has decided to stick to being a complete computer over everything else. THat is what i need.

TO code and compile on the go. PLus with some of the software already out for it, screen limitations can be bypassed with scaling.

So my vote is for the Oqo. If the cpc looked just like the oqo I would buy it. But the fact of the matter is their both exotic sports cars, wha would you rather drive? A rolls royce (cPC) or a quick sexy sexy porsche(oqo)?

Note: please pardon any spelling or gramatical mistakes... im too lazy to proofread.

"I would in terms of current benchmarks on both products, the C7-m is almost 600% faster."

That would seem to be consistent with what I observed. I cannot overstate this point, THAT THING WAS FAST!

"Thats like buying a car, and then buying another one for when you want to go slower."

ROTFLMAO! Thanks for that.

"Thats like buying a car, and then buying another one for when you want to go slower."

lol, I said something similar on another thread.... its the best way to explain why WM5 would b useless on a mobile handtop.
if I do but the cpc (no way I am) what would I do when am out with my friends on weekends, I have to take my phone with me... am not halling that thing with me! am not buying another phone either... its simply stupid or better yeţits just not for me.

Thanks mensrea for the awesome review.

As mentioned in another thread, combining WM5 w/ XP would make perfect sense if such combo could significantly prolong operating time - as now you could check your email, handling PIM functions, surfing etc.. in WM5 which is running on a much lighter CPU and hence save the power.

The fast/slow car analogy is funny but as to me it's sort of off the point. As said, C7m provides rounds of faster performance and consumes more power, so is the brighter screen. In this case WM5 is critical to balance the processing speed for an optimal battery time and quite ingenious w/ data sharing (no sync needed).

It's like going to war w/ only a heavy duty machine gun and limited ammunition but all you want is to kill couple annoy mosquitoes & rats for the time being (I know this is not exactly an good analogy either but u get my point...).

Basically this is how I think of why Dualcor would do such thing putting WM5 and XP together.

And mensrea: man you SHOULD totally tell Steven how "FUGLY" cPC is..lol. I hope he saw that when you had your OQO next to it.

Actually, compared to the oQo's Transmeta chip, yes, you're correct, it's a *much* faster chip, but it actually consumes *less* power.
