Hi to all,

I just want to tell everybody how easy it was to put SuSE 9.2 on my new OQO

I have byed OQO 01 from Expansys (there are only few pcs. on stock - model 01 will be sold out soon) ...

and wanted to have Linux in addition to windows (as on all other PCs that I have)

So USB DVD device attached, boot, choose 800x480 resolution, evrt. works good till X-Server has to started for the first time - and peng - text mode.

So I had to make text mode install of SuSe, but there was no problem - just choose "next" couple of times and voilla - SuSE Linux with Grub bootmanager was ready to use on my OQO. On the second try YaST was able to recognize the video card / display and run crisp and sharp KDE on the screen.

I was pleased to find out how easy it was to get it working. OQO is a fine piece of hardware.

Have a lot of fun with your OQO!

why 9.2? 10 is out.

Why I have used 9.2?

Simply to answer - no installation media for 10.x, no broadband internet (until the ~4 Gb download is ready ver. 20 will be out ;-) and not want to wait until ordered DVD is at home...

So just used what I have - an very very old SuSE 9.2...

Very Best Regards

Can it do 1280X1024 resoultion ?

I just used the modeline from ubuntu, so it can 800x480, but setting (virtual workspace?) 1280x1024 is over my capabilities as linux user. Sorry.

I am installing RedHat 9 soon. Its old but I have the CD's and, I have a slow internet connection. 800X480 is better than nothing.

tnkgrl, can you let us know whats involved in getting a higher resolution ?

That was easy. Checked out for virtual resolution in google. Added "Viurtual 1024 768" in the screen section / subsection display and it works.

1280 1024 does not work for me - corrupted display.

"Virtual 1024 768"

and NOT

"Viurtual 1024 768"

Sorry for the inconvinience

RedHat installed beatifuully however hangs when I boot it.

I need something certified by Oracle so RedHat and SUSE 9 are my only choices. I have to locate SUSE disks somehow.

Thank you so much for this very valuble info. You are awesome.
emiltcho, what happens at 1280X1024 ?

I am going the SUSE route if I cannot overcome my RedHat 9 problem. It just hangs during bootup while performing "Configuring Kernel Parameters". It just never comes back. Before this happens the boot seems to be going great.

I have got no proper image on 1280x1024 - it was corrupted. I can see the single image lines with about 10-20 pixel distance between them, so you can imagine how the screen looks like. 1024x768 works fine. As I already said my Linux skills are USER LEVEL... My be one of the great GURUS can help?

Forgotten to tell, I have got problems with GRUB. Windows had overwritten the MBR after first boot and I was no more able to run LINUX.
Workabout: I have used grub from Knoppix NTFS Poorman Installation (Ruymbeke) and this works perfect, just needed to edit menu.lst and add the proper path to vmlinuz of SuSE. Now I have WinXP Startmenu with "Start Grub" entry in it, after choosing and starting grub I can run my SuSE... Thank you Ruymbeke!

emiltcho,

I got this from victorgv's post which reinstates XP in the Grub bootloader: link

there is no fdisk /mbr in winxp .You can boot using provided winxp chose recovery consol and run fixboot and or fixmbr.
Or
-----------------------
grub > root (hd0,0)
grub > chainloader +1
grub> boot
-----------------------
and it should start your windows

So you have the opposite, so using your Knoppix cd

grub> root (hd1,1)
grub> chainloader +1
grub > boot

(hd1,1) should be where your Suse install is loaded.

emiltcho, do you still have SUSE installed ?

Yes.

I am playing around with it. Due to small place (3.5 GB for / ) I have not installed the Kernel sources / Compiler and was not able to recompile Kernel with cpuid/longrun support -> this couses my OQO to run hot and loud.

At this weekend I will reduce the Windows partition one more time and will try SUSE 10 ( have allready the cd's) this time WITH compiler tools => WITH longrun.

I will post my experience here, once I have it running.
