Come on folks..."MUST HAVE" features here ONLY:
* I wonder how long until this thread deteriorates. 8)

Now that I know that Jory is listening to feeedback from this site (from the podcast)...

Must have Model 02 Features:
1. (MOVED FROM #8 on7/1/06) Same form factor (if not smaller, you must continue to innovate like you said 1-2 years before the UMPC form factor catches up due to board design and mass component production).
2. Intel C or P-M OR Via C7-M processor (support for SSE2/3 instructions)
3. 1 Gb [faster DDR2] RAM (Windows 2003/Vista support)
4. (ADDED NEW 7/1/06) Battery life must be at least 3 hours with standard battery and 6+ hours with extended capacity battery. Size of this extended capacity battery plus the Handtop must keep the Handtop pocketable.
5. Passive touchscreen [Gunze..they're cheap, available, and have 800x600 resolution...trumping the UMPC spec]
I hope OQO switches to the Passive touchscreen requirement like ALL of the UMPC vendors.
For a mobile platform of this size, a stylus should NOT be a requirement.
6. Backlit keyboard (come on LEDs for Pete's sake)
7. 802.11g with WPA2 support (perhaps the subprocessor needs to support 802.11n)
8. A real docking station (like the Sony U or any of the Thinkpad docking stations...think slide it in and it's connected to external disk, kybd/mouse, LCD, DVD burner, etc.)
9. Built-in cellular or at least interoperability with USB celllular devices for Edge, UMTS, and EVDO (aka whatever the highspeed cellular data service Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T/Cingular support...no one cares about Sprint anymore).
10. Same current features (*may* lose firewire port to reclaim space, but must have USB 2.0, BT, thumboard, scroll wheel, rotating display, etc.)
11. Dual video display output support--For presentations, this feature allow the display to be seen on the OQO display and on the connected device (monitor or projector), which is standard in any laptop/tablet on the market.
12. Same accessories (must at least continue to support the double capacity battery and VGA adapter) Earlier reports that the 02 accessories will not work with the 01/01+ were upsetting
*13. (Willing to trade 12 if 13 is satisfied). Redesigned power conduit to support more generic power assemblies. I stated the feature request here: link
14. Be innovative, a flaw in the current OQO design is the lack of thought for the "modular computer" philosophy. If you want to stay ahead, I believe you need to think, design, and execute around this concept.
Why?
Jory's interview highlighted the fact that competition "is targeted at the 'extremely low price point', companion device for the consumer-based lifestyle market."
If OQO wants to differentiate themself from the others, the OQO must be percieved by enterprise and government purchasing and IT teams as a standalone personal computer. In the next 2-5 years, this means that the OQO model 02-03 must become a desktop replacement, a notebook replacement, a tablet replace, etc. or a primary PC. Expansion is key in this area--CPU, memory, disk, and other desktop peripherals.
A- You'll need a powerful CPU for that and a lot of RAM (for Vista)
B- You'll need a way to expand the OQO, adding periperhals like DVD Dual-layer burners, NAS/SAN access, and way to give some one the feel at times that they have a full notebook infront of them. I'm thinking a larger OQO shell which I've commented here in the forums for a while ( link ).
Think expansion of every aspect of the OQO while docked.
Here's a concept of an iPod docked in a notebook:

14. {Added 6/12} The ability to power and charge via the USB port.
Many other portable devices such as the iPod, Treo, and PocketPC can be charged and powered through the USB port on those devices. I never carry a power brick for these devices, just the device and a retractable USB charge and sync for that device (like this link ).

Components and features like a solid state drive are nice to have, but for its 2-3 year price point only the rich and the government will buy that option. Sure offer it, but not in the "standard" model. Even DualCor is preparing for government sales. EDIT {Added 6/12} Samsung just announced a $900 USD 32 Gb solid state drive...That's not that expensive for some.

I'm not telling you what markets you need to be in, but I've said it before and I'll repeat it now, field government people and other "field jobs" would eat the current product up if government purchasing and IT folks put you on the approved purchasing list. Watch TV shows like CSI, 24, Prison Break, Smallville, Cops, US Marshalls, America's Most Wanted, the NEWS, Congress, and you'll see the huge possibilties.

Can you tell I use to be in marketing and product management? It's nice being the customer.

The NEW Perpendicular 1.8 HDs like the new iPod Video will be in the 120GB range. If the OQO was a tiny fraction THICKER, like those of us who have already shoved in the 2 platter drives, that would be something of a true replacement type unit. 20-30 GB is almost a joke these days. You can buy desktops with 120GB for 399 from Dell. If 02 isnt CUTTING edge.... Apple may smoke OQO out of the market.

As for the other features: YES YES YES REAL TOUCH SCREEN. I frakkin HATE that missaligned stylus.

samsung just anounced solid state hd pc with 32gb flash as the hd this is a must link (and if noonelsewants this they can make it just for me - clamshell model) dump the firewire

That 32gb sold state drive is so awesome. I would pay for that in an oqo.

Come to think of it now though, the O needs better graphical capabilities. No if ands or buts about it. I need a video card that can support at least to the very minium direct x 9c, and T&L.

Man the O really has some potential to blow the competition out of the water here.

*Fingers crossed*

One other thing i noted is I don't really care about EDGE incorporation, I prefer to use a cell phone to talk, and as such will alwyas have one on my when needed. As such I can just use the phone for my internet needs via Bluetooth DUN.

Also about the size increase in the shell of the oqo as stated by Fil, this is a very touchy proposition, an increase in size would dissappoint me big time. I got the o over the lifebook or sony u, or any other handtop out there becuase of its size. It is the smallest, and as such is the easiest to bring where ever I go, make it bigger and you leave the question wide open for potential buyers. Why not just get a small notebook? The one size expansion i would be ok with is depth. SImilar to the size change when using the double cap battery.

So my vote keep it small, same form - factor, otherwise I might have to move on, and get the lifebook.

Oh man, that Lifebook DOES look sweet,.... Ive thought about selling my Laptop, Powerbook and OQO and getting the full blown Lifebook with 3 year unconditional warranty.

In my opinion the built in cellular is something that should be an option for the sake of those of us that don't need it.. My cellular phone is more than sufficient for any mobile data I want to transfer. It's easily connected via bluetooth and the phone stays in my pocket.

Can one of you USA people tell me more why you guys want to pay for another sim card that is plugged into a computer or a pcmcia card?

FWIW I'm in Finland.

My want list for the 02 is pretty much the same:
- faster cpu
- backlit keyboard
- faster wifi (also better wifi reception)
- proper docking solution (I was really disappointed that the dock in the teaser video didn't make it into production)
- more compatible graphics solution! this is a big problem for me, as I like games and demoscene productions, most of which don't run with the Lynx drivers. It doesn't have to be directx eleven or run the newest games at 100fps, but if software crashes when they want to go fullscreen, then that's quite a big flaw in my book.

I'll wait for the 02 before making any rash descisions on upgrading from the 01+ I now have, but especially the graphics issues are a real problem for me. I'm not a corporate user. For me the OQO is an entertainment device and a communications tool for private use.

I will repeat my Same old list that I keep repeating
1. clamshell
2. Solid State HD
3. thinner Lighter
4. Back lite Keyboard
5. instant on
6. finger touchscreen
7. of coarse, Wireless G

I see repeated mention of solid-state HDDs. The question is, what are people willing to pay for it? The story about the Samsung laptop using a 32GB NAND drive gives a glimpse at what kind of premium NAND drives will carry:

link

$900 more for the version with the NAND drive - and that's for a 32GB drive. As the technology advances, prices will come down. However, how much could they by this Fall when many of us expect that the 02 will roll out? For some people a solid-state drive will be invaluable. But I have to believe that if OQO offers it, it will be as an option. You'd probably be able to get a model with a platter based drive with greater capacity for a lot cheaper. The benefits of solid state (speed, lower power consumption, reliability, etc) are undeniable but those will certainly come at a price. I wouldn't be surprised to see OQO offer it as an option on the 02, but not as a standard feature given the premium.

You wrote: $900 more for the version with the NAND drive - and that's for a 32GB drive.
So what's your point?
I payed three times the price of a computer with these features of the model 01 and the model 01+. And I would be happy to pay a premium for a NAND drive HDD. The way I look at it is this. I am investing into the machine that I always wanted. I conceder this, that I am contributing to my on R&D department. These are the feature my department is currently developing.
1. clamshell
2. Solid State HD
3. thinner Lighter
4. Back lite Keyboard
5. instant on
6. finger touchscreen
7. of coarse, Wireless G

Instead of wishful daydreaming about what model 02 should have, just pray there will be a model 02 at all!

My point is that some people are asking for NAND drives without understanding what they will cost or that they will probably be much smaller than whatever platter HDD is offered. If you're willing to pay the price, great. I was only bringing the price issue to people's attention to create reasonable expectations. If they think it won't be that much more expensive and then turns out to be, rest assured they'll complain. They may complain anyway even if they know, but at least they would have been warned ahead of time.

I can't possibly be the only one who requires firewire. Where are all the musicians out there? It needs to stay. Especially since Vista will uncripple it. Interface options for Symbolic Sounds Capybara is firewire. Interface options for Roland's V-Drums connected to a Video presenter is firewire. If you all want the interface to go away, then at least put a radio chip in it so I can have wireless firewire & usb. Now that would rock.

i don't want firewire to go away.
and rl, I honestly don't think your intouch with reality. It is after the 02 has been releases that we should be worried and thats only if they didn't manage to beef it up.

It's all about customer demand, firewire is not very popular. For some it is very important but most... I would imagine a good compromise would be to keep it on the docking cable.

Best thing to happen is if OQO was bought up by Apple...which the diehard OQO fans know there is irony in that.

rl,
After all, people who started OQO came from APPLE. Think about that.
