Come on folks..."MUST HAVE" features here ONLY:
* I wonder how long until this thread deteriorates. 8)
Now that I know that Jory is listening to feeedback from this site (from the podcast)...
Must have Model 02 Features:
1. (MOVED FROM #8 on7/1/06) Same form factor (if not smaller, you must continue to innovate like you said 1-2 years before the UMPC form factor catches up due to board design and mass component production).
2. Intel C or P-M OR Via C7-M processor (support for SSE2/3 instructions)
3. 1 Gb [faster DDR2] RAM (Windows 2003/Vista support)
4. (ADDED NEW 7/1/06) Battery life must be at least 3 hours with standard battery and 6+ hours with extended capacity battery. Size of this extended capacity battery plus the Handtop must keep the Handtop pocketable.
5. Passive touchscreen [Gunze..they're cheap, available, and have 800x600 resolution...trumping the UMPC spec]
I hope OQO switches to the Passive touchscreen requirement like ALL of the UMPC vendors.
For a mobile platform of this size, a stylus should NOT be a requirement.
6. Backlit keyboard (come on LEDs for Pete's sake)
7. 802.11g with WPA2 support (perhaps the subprocessor needs to support 802.11n)
8. A real docking station (like the Sony U or any of the Thinkpad docking stations...think slide it in and it's connected to external disk, kybd/mouse, LCD, DVD burner, etc.)
9. Built-in cellular or at least interoperability with USB celllular devices for Edge, UMTS, and EVDO (aka whatever the highspeed cellular data service Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T/Cingular support...no one cares about Sprint anymore).
10. Same current features (*may* lose firewire port to reclaim space, but must have USB 2.0, BT, thumboard, scroll wheel, rotating display, etc.)
11. Dual video display output support--For presentations, this feature allow the display to be seen on the OQO display and on the connected device (monitor or projector), which is standard in any laptop/tablet on the market.
12. Same accessories (must at least continue to support the double capacity battery and VGA adapter) Earlier reports that the 02 accessories will not work with the 01/01+ were upsetting
*13. (Willing to trade 12 if 13 is satisfied). Redesigned power conduit to support more generic power assemblies. I stated the feature request here: link
14. Be innovative, a flaw in the current OQO design is the lack of thought for the "modular computer" philosophy. If you want to stay ahead, I believe you need to think, design, and execute around this concept.
Why?
Jory's interview highlighted the fact that competition "is targeted at the 'extremely low price point', companion device for the consumer-based lifestyle market."
If OQO wants to differentiate themself from the others, the OQO must be percieved by enterprise and government purchasing and IT teams as a standalone personal computer. In the next 2-5 years, this means that the OQO model 02-03 must become a desktop replacement, a notebook replacement, a tablet replace, etc. or a primary PC. Expansion is key in this area--CPU, memory, disk, and other desktop peripherals.
A- You'll need a powerful CPU for that and a lot of RAM (for Vista)
B- You'll need a way to expand the OQO, adding periperhals like DVD Dual-layer burners, NAS/SAN access, and way to give some one the feel at times that they have a full notebook infront of them. I'm thinking a larger OQO shell which I've commented here in the forums for a while ( link ).
Think expansion of every aspect of the OQO while docked.
Here's a concept of an iPod docked in a notebook:

14. {Added 6/12} The ability to power and charge via the USB port.
Many other portable devices such as the iPod, Treo, and PocketPC can be charged and powered through the USB port on those devices. I never carry a power brick for these devices, just the device and a retractable USB charge and sync for that device (like this link ).
Components and features like a solid state drive are nice to have, but for its 2-3 year price point only the rich and the government will buy that option. Sure offer it, but not in the "standard" model. Even DualCor is preparing for government sales. EDIT {Added 6/12} Samsung just announced a $900 USD 32 Gb solid state drive...That's not that expensive for some.
I'm not telling you what markets you need to be in, but I've said it before and I'll repeat it now, field government people and other "field jobs" would eat the current product up if government purchasing and IT folks put you on the approved purchasing list. Watch TV shows like CSI, 24, Prison Break, Smallville, Cops, US Marshalls, America's Most Wanted, the NEWS, Congress, and you'll see the huge possibilties.
Can you tell I use to be in marketing and product management? It's nice being the customer.
