Come on folks..."MUST HAVE" features here ONLY:
* I wonder how long until this thread deteriorates. 8)

Now that I know that Jory is listening to feeedback from this site (from the podcast)...

Must have Model 02 Features:
1. (MOVED FROM #8 on7/1/06) Same form factor (if not smaller, you must continue to innovate like you said 1-2 years before the UMPC form factor catches up due to board design and mass component production).
2. Intel C or P-M OR Via C7-M processor (support for SSE2/3 instructions)
3. 1 Gb [faster DDR2] RAM (Windows 2003/Vista support)
4. (ADDED NEW 7/1/06) Battery life must be at least 3 hours with standard battery and 6+ hours with extended capacity battery. Size of this extended capacity battery plus the Handtop must keep the Handtop pocketable.
5. Passive touchscreen [Gunze..they're cheap, available, and have 800x600 resolution...trumping the UMPC spec]
I hope OQO switches to the Passive touchscreen requirement like ALL of the UMPC vendors.
For a mobile platform of this size, a stylus should NOT be a requirement.
6. Backlit keyboard (come on LEDs for Pete's sake)
7. 802.11g with WPA2 support (perhaps the subprocessor needs to support 802.11n)
8. A real docking station (like the Sony U or any of the Thinkpad docking stations...think slide it in and it's connected to external disk, kybd/mouse, LCD, DVD burner, etc.)
9. Built-in cellular or at least interoperability with USB celllular devices for Edge, UMTS, and EVDO (aka whatever the highspeed cellular data service Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T/Cingular support...no one cares about Sprint anymore).
10. Same current features (*may* lose firewire port to reclaim space, but must have USB 2.0, BT, thumboard, scroll wheel, rotating display, etc.)
11. Dual video display output support--For presentations, this feature allow the display to be seen on the OQO display and on the connected device (monitor or projector), which is standard in any laptop/tablet on the market.
12. Same accessories (must at least continue to support the double capacity battery and VGA adapter) Earlier reports that the 02 accessories will not work with the 01/01+ were upsetting
*13. (Willing to trade 12 if 13 is satisfied). Redesigned power conduit to support more generic power assemblies. I stated the feature request here: link
14. Be innovative, a flaw in the current OQO design is the lack of thought for the "modular computer" philosophy. If you want to stay ahead, I believe you need to think, design, and execute around this concept.
Why?
Jory's interview highlighted the fact that competition "is targeted at the 'extremely low price point', companion device for the consumer-based lifestyle market."
If OQO wants to differentiate themself from the others, the OQO must be percieved by enterprise and government purchasing and IT teams as a standalone personal computer. In the next 2-5 years, this means that the OQO model 02-03 must become a desktop replacement, a notebook replacement, a tablet replace, etc. or a primary PC. Expansion is key in this area--CPU, memory, disk, and other desktop peripherals.
A- You'll need a powerful CPU for that and a lot of RAM (for Vista)
B- You'll need a way to expand the OQO, adding periperhals like DVD Dual-layer burners, NAS/SAN access, and way to give some one the feel at times that they have a full notebook infront of them. I'm thinking a larger OQO shell which I've commented here in the forums for a while ( link ).
Think expansion of every aspect of the OQO while docked.
Here's a concept of an iPod docked in a notebook:

14. {Added 6/12} The ability to power and charge via the USB port.
Many other portable devices such as the iPod, Treo, and PocketPC can be charged and powered through the USB port on those devices. I never carry a power brick for these devices, just the device and a retractable USB charge and sync for that device (like this link ).

Components and features like a solid state drive are nice to have, but for its 2-3 year price point only the rich and the government will buy that option. Sure offer it, but not in the "standard" model. Even DualCor is preparing for government sales. EDIT {Added 6/12} Samsung just announced a $900 USD 32 Gb solid state drive...That's not that expensive for some.

I'm not telling you what markets you need to be in, but I've said it before and I'll repeat it now, field government people and other "field jobs" would eat the current product up if government purchasing and IT folks put you on the approved purchasing list. Watch TV shows like CSI, 24, Prison Break, Smallville, Cops, US Marshalls, America's Most Wanted, the NEWS, Congress, and you'll see the huge possibilties.

Can you tell I use to be in marketing and product management? It's nice being the customer.

Any comments on video capabilities. In order to be even Vista ready, it'll have to be DirectX9 compatible.

I'm adding another must have feature--OQO has the ability to power and charge via the USB port.

Many other portable devices such as the iPod, Treo, and PocketPC can be charged and powered through the USB port on those devices.
I never carry a power brick for these devices, just the device and a retractable USB charge and sync for that device (like this link ).

OQO should consider adding the ability to for the device to be charged through the USB port.

This new device power source device is just another example of other mobile gadgets that can be charged through the USB port. APC's Mobile Power Pack delivers juice via USB: link

I think only a slave device can be charged by a master device. The OQO (master) can charge any USB slave device, but it cannot be charged by another master device unless it had a special port.

Besides the USB port has no where near enough power to run an OQO and to charge the battery would take a very long time with the current of a USB port.

I would like a power only USB port (female) on the external power supply, that way you can charge all your devices without having to turn on your OQO. So many devices today are USB chargeable.

Actually, the oqo 01 and 01+ can't power most peripherals, via usb or firewire, by design. With the battery challenge, powering peripherals was dropped. Anything that has a disk needs to have it's own power source. It might be possible to put a USB "b" outlet into the side of the oqo to power it (like a slave).

one thing i really like about UX is the *dual cameras* on both front & back... too bad model 02 would probably never have that

I just moved the size to the #1 position because of the Sony UX series.

Size does matter to quite a few of us here at handtops (not all), but according to many threads in the OQO forum and banter in the UX forum, this ranking move is warranted.

I also added the battery life requirement. Funny I skipped this, but the 01/01+ extended battery is decent today with 4.5 hours of battery life, but battery life is always a requirement.

Hmm, this is my first post here, so hi everyone :-)

I have given it some thought:

1. Same form factor. I so much like the simplicity of it all.

2. 512MB RAM, upgradeable to 1GB

3. Firewire is a must, I want this OQO to pair up with my recorder (Sound Devices 722). 6-pin would be preferable. No firewire, no sale to me. This is the most important of all, second to none. An Oqo would be bought to use on the road for editing a wee bit of audio, writing and so forth.

4. Almost as important as the FW: Battery usage time. At least five hours with extended battery

5. Headphone minijack - for obvious reasons

6. Backlit keyboard would certainly be a nice feature. I use a Powerbook and I find the backlit rather useful.

7. USB 2.0, Bluetooth 2.0 and Wifi

8. I like the docking cable - I dislike "proper" docks. The VGA-adaptor is nifty. Something like that should be possible to buy.

I don't necessarily need ethernet, but a modem would be nice on the road.

What I really, really, really do NOT want are the following:

"Smart phone" features. I do NOT want it to be a phone. I do NOT want it to have a SIM card - that alone would be a deal breaker.

Infrared

All-sorts of buttons for "navigation" (you know, all those extra buttons to "connect to web", "Mail", "Media player" and whatnot.

Stereo speakers (why add the weight?) Why have speakers to begin with?

All the rest of the "smart phone" dumb features.

Ah, I forgot:

Also on the no-no list: Camera! Why do people want to pay for that? Anyway, I prefer a decent camera to take the pictures instead. The reason is basically the same for me not listening to music through my telly, or worse, through the telephone.

piperpete some comments:

I understand while you require firewire, I think you would agree most wouldn't. It should stay on your list but on the 'every bodys list' maybe not there.

Wifi g would be nice (maybe that is what you wanted)

modems and ethernet can be easily bought as a USB dongles.

SIM card would be good for 3G data services, not used as a phone (the option would be there for some if necessary)

Infrared can also be bought as USB dongle. (its a dead technology)

A speaker is good to have, not only for general windows audio but for watching broadband TV and listening to online radio stations. Also for email notification.

The only thing I would want a camera for is video chatting. I travel a lot and having a face to the conversation goes a long way.

These are just general comments, but your list is good.

oh and by the way welcome to the forum

Kyone,

I need to comment to you too.

The firewire is not just a want, it's a need. If it's not there I will have no use for the OQO, because I would need to bring along my laptop as well - rendering everything else useless to me. In that sense I feel it ought to be there. Besides, the firewire doesn't cost much, nor does it take up much space. There is really no reason to nix it.

About the wifi-g: I just want something wifi that can connect to most things. I am not sure which is the best/most compatible. The "fastest" is kind of stupid, because the HD will have to be able to go along, so I simply want wifi that is fast enough and won't be discontinued tomorrow. I am not sure that everyone wants or needs "g". However, I am assuming most simply just want wi-fi that is fast and will not go out tomorrow.

I know about dongles, and I hate them. I can't be alone in that thinking. Heck I even sold my Bias audio editor because it had a dongle. I hate them (LOL, sorry, but I just sold my Bias Apps because of the need for a dongle and switched to Logic Pro, only to find out they're nixing the need for a dongle now (because I'm not the only one that is annoyed by those things))

Infrared: Yes, certainly not needed.

Speakers: I don't need to get an audio message when I get an email. I try to plan when I check emails. And movies on it? You'd be better of with headphones for that (better audio) - besides, the sound in general won't be good.

I would use the wi-fi for streaming radio stations.

the 3G - I do see the use for some people, but the thing is, paying for something I already have in a separate device which is much better at it, makes it useless, and I really think that in reality most people don't want a smartphone with a hdd (which is just about what the oqo would become - at least in the eyes of the uninitiated.)
Also, I saw a 3g-dongle the other day. I also saw a 3g-card (can't remember if it was CF or some other sort, though).

I can see the use for a camera for video-chatting, even though I don't do that myself. When I read "camera" at first, I thought of a camera like those on cell phones, which also annoy the hell out of me (you pay for somehting that adds bulk, weight and price without any real use after a month (scratches etc)).

Actually, come to think of it, a CF-card reader, in-built, would be nice, but I don't like devices that try to do everything.
