Looks like the boys over at jkontherun are non to happy with the status of the Dualcor and for many, many reasons have named it the 2006 Vaporware of the Year. link

The trouble DualCor had with interactions between Bluetooth and WiFi underscores the forethought and engineering prowess of OQO and SONY. I can imagine that the OQO and U constitute minor miracles, and their engineers must be busting at the seams, trying to contain their pride from having actually pulled it off.

"Version two will have BT & WiFi, and some way to plug in other wireless protocols. Because of radio frequency issues different radios can’t easily be put inside the “box”, but they can go outside somewhere, say under a sliding screen, without conflict."

Oh really? That was certainly true when WiFi and Bluetooth were just coming on the scene, but a number of OEMs have developed the means for multiple frequency radios to coexist without interfering with each other. (This may be another example of DualCor using obsolete technologies.)

To be frank, I understood the "need" for WinXP and WinCE on the same machine when the DualCor was announced, but the only current reason would be to be able to wake up on an alarm (something Vista seems able to do with the outboard screen). With all the issues DualCor seems to be having, I doubt it will have significant impact when/if it actually comes out.

Not to mention the question of how much impact a current technology device will have when its the size of the Motorola DynaTAC. The way I see it, both PCs (at least handtops and UMPCs) and cellphones are following a "smaller, lighter, thinner" trend as evidenced by the OQO, Sony UX, RAZR, Treo, and Motorola Q. Yet the CPC boys seem to want to buck the trend by giving you a 2lbs brick for your pocket. Personally, if I had to carry two pounds around, I'd prefer to split the weight with an OQO in one pocket and a phone in the other (not that together they'd even equal a pound)... much more than a single brick. The original Blackberry's still get chided for being reminiscent of a purple clamshell. I can't see how XP and WinCE in a DynaTAC form factor and with a DynaTAC's weight is going to have any significant impact... though it'll definitely be much less with obsolete technologies...

Well, it might have an impact if someone threw one at you, but otherwise...

It strikes me odd, but weren't the ontherun folks and friends on the DualCor Advisory Board or worked there for a bit?

I suggested that they give it the 2006 FlipStart Vaporware award (or is that FlipFlop???...)....

;-)

It's mentioned in the blog entry - basically they were never consulted at all, so the advisory board died a natural death.
