It surprises even ourselves when we say that HTC's Shift should be the UMPC device that makes us—who were mild on UMPCs before—a fan of the platform. Instead of using a split keyboard or a *shudder* on-screen circle pad, the Shift makes like the Advantage with its sliding and flipping screen. With the input problem solved, you can really enjoy the 7-inch touchscreen, 30GB hard drive, Tri-Band UMTS/HSDPA, Quad-Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi, and Windows Vista.
More so than the Advantage, the OQO2, or the Flipstart, the Shift can serve as a substitute for a laptop when you're out of the house, away on business trips—or hell, even at home.
When we played with it last week, we found the keys very comfortable, the weight fairly light (but heavy enough to be solid), and the touchscreen responsive. Current plans has it headed for a Q3 2007 release, which honestly isn't soon enough for us. We're ready to leave our laptops at home now. – Jason Chen

In what way is this 'more so' than an 02? Is it smaller?

That hi res picture impressed me. Before that I thought it was a mockup in photoshop. Looks to be the real thing. Why must we wait to Q3?
Now what's the actual size of the thing?

It strikes me that there's a bit of a problem with the articles we've seen to date. They say the thing is the size of a couple of DVD cases. DVD cases (I checked) are 7.25"x5"X5/8". I'm assuming the two would be stacked, so the dimensions of this, according to that statement, would be 7.25X5X1.25. That's really a good size, in my opinion, if you want a keyboard that you can actually type on, rather than pecking with thumbs or two fingers, and if you still want it small enough to fit in a large pocket.
BUT.... Then it says that the screen is 7". And if you look at the pics, there's about 2" or so of frame around the outside of that 7" screen. The Q1 has a 7" screen and similar frame, and its dimensions are 9"X 5.5". MUCH longer and wider than a DVD case.
So if this really does have a 7" screen, then the thing is not that much smaller than my Lifebook, and if that's the case, I probably wouldn't cough up more money for it - the Lifebook suits me well enough for something in that size range. I was looking for something a little more pocketable.

This is exactly what I was thinking - is it the same size as a Fujitsu 1610p? In which case its borderline UMPC in my book.

Screen sizes are always diagonally though..
When I read that two DVD cases I was like "that's the thickness only right??" and also I was thinking of CD ROM cases (hence CD) not a DVD case, if this is like 2 DVD rental cases, thats double the size of the OQO ....back to square one for me then!
That would however make this keyboard a FULL KEYBOARD and NOT a thumbboard!!

It seems to have a similar keyboard to the p1610d, not full size but not a thumbboard

So far I am impressed by HTC Shift. They could of make it wxga though and we will have to wait to get the exact dimension, however, it looks smaller than the Samsung Q1 ultra which is great.
This will make the Flipstart and Q2 sweat a little.

This is roughly from what I can tell the size of a lifebook. SO not that impressive in terms of size and mobility. However I have to admit that the device looks nice. Isn't HTC a dutch company though,l so I wonder how that will effect US sales?

P.s.: Also interested in CPU, Vid Card, RAM, etc.

Seems smaller than a lifebook to me. The 1610/1510 have 8.9 inch screens.

it can serve as a laptop replacement better because it's not just a vertical device, it can also be used in the more traditional horizontal layout. although i realize that is somewhat debatable with the FS.

HTC is not a Dutch company, they're in Taiwan.
I'm really interested in this Shift.
I have an HTC Universal, and it seems well made and has been very reliable.
More reliable than Windows Mobile for instance. ;-)
