I'd like to hear from someone who has reformatted their HDD to regain the 8 meg that Sony hides for the recovery data. I've made two sets of backups and am getting low on space, so I'd like to find a way to redeem the space for my use, not Sony's.
Any suggestions, stories, etc. would be welcome.
Thanks,
Dave

There is a process that allows you to create recovery CDs from the recovery partition. Once you do that, you no longer need the partition as long as you have a _bootable_ CD ROM reader. (Not all CD ROM readers boot on the UX.) You can easily recover the space, without even reformatting by using the trial version of Partition Magic. It will allow you to merge the recovery partition and the main partition.
I should say that I've never done this. My UXes did not include the recovery partition. (They were Japanese models re-loaded with English OS by Conics.)

I own the U and OQOs, but I've always Ghosted the main drive, reformated and used the whole disk using the restore image, so this can be done.
I'd make sure that you restore images work by rebooting and seeing if you external CD is bootable and to verify that your recovery disks can be read.
If so, reformat (with one partition) and resotre using your recovery discs, that's it.
