READ about the MINI PCI EXPRESS card being used in the OQO 02
If that is the interface for the WWAN card in the OQO 02 then you can change it out with another card from the same manufacturer for there various HSDPA cards which appear to be the same form factor and voltage! While I am sure one would void the warranty, some might consider this a viable option to get what they want from their OQO 02. This is what I am considering doing plus changing the Hard Drive to the new 64GB solid state drive from Seagate (FASTER than the old 32GB solid state drives)

I titled a topic wrong earlier so I am correcting with this new one.

My OQO order has changed to "building". I will contact Novatel this week for one of their HSDPA cards.

*1trillion*, I'm way ahead of you

I've already contacted Novatel about their Mini PCI Express HSDPA cards - they don't sell them directly because they're designed for OEM use, not for retail sale! The cards are available from NexAira and I'm ordering one. I've even already talked to one of their engineers, and as I expected, some hacking will be required to connect a SIM card holder and a ESD diode array to the Mini PCE Express bus...

It's possible the OQO motherboard already includes the ESD diode array and an unused, proprietary connector for a SIM card holder, but until I take a look & void my warranty it's pure speculation.

I've also ordered 10 samples of SIM card holders (ultra-thin 6-contact switch-less) and 10 samples of the ESD diode array (SRV05-4.TCT) and I've obtained a wiring diagram.

As for the SSD, it requires a 1.8" form factor with a ZIF connector - currently only Sandisk makes one, and it's 32 GB.

Tnkgrl hold on a bit with the SSD, I accidently typed SEAGATE SSD in my original post when I said I was putting in an SSD in my OQO 02, I ment to say the Samsung 64GB 1.8" SSD. SHould be available VERY soon and a has significant improvement in performanc... (i.e. ......

Taipei, Taiwan - March 27, 2007: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the leader in advanced semiconductor technology, announced at its annual Mobile Solution Forum in Taipei that it has developed a 1.8"-type 64 Gigabyte (GB) flash-solid state drive (SSD). The new flash-SSD is based on an eight gigabit (Gb) single-level-cell (SLC) NAND, which provides significantly higher performance over conventional SSDs.

The read and write performance of the new SLC flash-SSD have been increased by 20 percent and 60 percent respectively over the 32GB flash-SSD Samsung introduced last year, meaning that the new SSD's ability to outperform conventional rotating-media hard drives is even greater than had been anticipated.

Samsung's continued nano-technology migration is a key enabling factor in the continued market segmentation for storage media. Besides the use of the 64 GB flash-SSD for notebook PCs, 8~16GB flash-SSDs will become viable solutions for use in personal navigation systems and digital camcorders, as will and hundred GB-level flash-SSDs for use in the server market.

The flash-SSD, a drop-in replacement for a hard disk drive, is a secure and reliable means of storing personal or work-related data. It uses instantly-accessible, non-moving NAND flash memory instead of the noisier, power-hungry, jarring-sensitive rotating disc found in conventional hard drives, allowing it to upload and download data quickly and quietly with minimal power consumption.

Samsung plans to start mass production of the 1.8"-type 64GB flash-SSD in the second quarter of this year.

*1trillion*, that's good to know - I'm really more interested in getting HSDPA working first, so I can wait for the 64 GB SSD

So I was not in 'fantasy land' after all when I thought this could work, or would be worth a try
i.e. to ''hack'' the 02 to be able to use 3G GSM on it

*ecsk2*, you're right and I'm wrong! I really didn't think there was room for OQO to use a standard Mini PCI Express module...

But there is: link

Hi tnkgrl

Following your link I can see that the Harddrive has the same size as the new 100gb Hd wich is offered by dynamism for the Sony UX. Am I correct in thinking that this could be upgraded on the Oqo?

*Flam* yes, I think so.

Well I'm not looking to be right, and since I was only making assumptions based on how the industry is doing more and more due to cost.

Either way I am glad to see you guys are looking into this with some real hopes of getting it done!

Now if I could be bold enough to do the same with the Sharp EM ONE I would like to have

*ecsk2*, if you buy one we can try it

That makes me thinking: Could the WWAN mini PCI card be possibly replaced by a GPS module?

Such as link or link

Anyone has an idea?

W.

I have a Sierra Wireless MC8765 (dual-band 850/1900 HSDPA + quad-band EDGE) on the way - link

It's the only card I was able to source that's in stock! I can always replace it with a better card later (tri-band 2100/850/1900 HSUPA)...

*wogaut* the only problem I can see with a GPS card is the antenna.

Any ideas on SIM card holder location ?

*kyone*, as I mentioned before, there's room (by design) for a SIM card holder (complete with a SIM card inserted) in the recessed area between the battery and the computer - link

The SIM card holder must be wired to the Mini PCI Express connector... That's the tricky part!

tnkgrl said: "*wogaut* the only problem I can see with a GPS card is the antenna."

Right, the antenna would most likely need to be external for GPS. I somehow have to drill a hole in the back cover for the antenna cable.
And actually looking at the available space, only PCI Express Mini cards fit, not the somewhat larger PCI Mini III-B cards.
Anyone knows a PCI Express Mini GPS module?

Wolfgang
