READ about the MINI PCI EXPRESS card being used in the OQO 02
If that is the interface for the WWAN card in the OQO 02 then you can change it out with another card from the same manufacturer for there various HSDPA cards which appear to be the same form factor and voltage! While I am sure one would void the warranty, some might consider this a viable option to get what they want from their OQO 02. This is what I am considering doing plus changing the Hard Drive to the new 64GB solid state drive from Seagate (FASTER than the old 32GB solid state drives)

I titled a topic wrong earlier so I am correcting with this new one.

tnkgrl,
I understand that but have u decided to use that area ? Ideally it would be good if you could mount it so that you could remove power to the HSDPA module while the OQO is still running and remove the SIM card. But in the end I would think you would have limited options and go for what ever works. Keep us posted on your progress.

*kyone* yes, I'll be using that area... I've ordered a bunch of different ultra-slim SIM card holders to try out!

I'm designing the mod such that it can be completely reversed, without permanent changes to the Model 02 - I'll most likely connect the SIM card holder (with ESD protection) directly to the Mini PCI Express card via a "ribbon" cable made of Kapton tape and ultra-thin transformer wire.

Once I've figured it all out I'll be offering the mod to others for a price

Ordered my OQO 02 on March 28th, 2007 (XP Pro, Best with sprint), unit shipped April 27th, 2007 from Singapore (Not too shabby turn around time in my case). OQO called me and said unit should be here by Monday the 30th. No word yet on my OQO 02 Field Pack Accessory Bundle or my OQO 02 Dock Station DVD+-RW Dual Layer Drive. Tnkgrl how long before your SIM chip adapters arrive?

My HSDPA Mini PCI Express card and SIM card holders should arrive next week...

It was very difficult finding an HSDPA Mini PCI Express card since they are only available for sale to OEMs, not to individuals! I wanted a tri-band HSDPA + quad-band EDGE card like the Novatel Expedite EU860D or the Sierra Wireless AirCard MC8781 or MC8775 but they have 6-8 week lead times for orders :/

So I ended up settling on an older Sierra Wireless MC8765 dual-band HSDPA (US bands) + quad-band EDGE which was in stock. Eventually I'll upgrade to a newer card.

I also uncovered that there's apparently a connector inside the Model 02 to accommodate a SIM card holder, but I'll still have to manufacture my own ribbon cable to connect to it

Using the pictures we have available to us of the OQO 02 internals can you show us were the connector is (if not specifically through the pictures, how about a rough zone). Have you looked inside your OQO 02 yet and found the spot? If so, could you upload pics to your site and link to them from Handtops.com? Were are you getting your ribbon cable? How much $? Thanks for any info in advance.

*1trillion*, I'm planning a full article on my blog to describe my HSDPA mod - you'll have to wait until then to get the details!

The information about the existence of a connector designed to accommodate a SIM card holder inside the Model 02 comes form a reliable source but is still unconfirmed - it's not visible in the FCC pictures, but apparently it's located on an existing ribbon cable between the EVDO card and the WiFi card...

As for parts, I'll be making my own ribbon cable by using Kapton tape and transformer wire and/or by hacking ribbon cable from other devices - the SIM card holders are free (I ordered samples from various manufacturers) and I purchased the Sierra Wireless card for about $200.

Ordered OQO 02 on March 28th (XP pro, Best, sprint... with free Docking Station) Both shipped April 27th and 28th. Both arrived today May 1st. No significant wait time to complain about here. Looking to upgrade to HSDPA now.

I'm still waiting for the HSDPA card that I ordered last week.
Sorry, duplicate post.

Shotgun!!!

I'd love to have HSDPA over EVDO but mainly for one reason. I want to be able to take the SIM card out of the OQO and put it into a PC card for my laptop's hsdpa pcmcia card. Will the mod allow for easy removal of the SIM card?

Yes.

Tnkgrl,

If an OQO was ordered without the WLAN installed, might it still be possible to add one of these?

You mean WWAN, right?

Perhaps... There are 2 antennae for WWAN, and the external one is missing from the non-WWAN Model 02's - if the internal one is missing as well, we have a problem, otherwise we're good to go!

Tnkgrl,

Yes WWAN. How embarassing.

Thanks. I would not want to void my warranty, but it's always good to know there is some potential upgrade path should I ever need it.

*vadsoom* I plan to offer the mod as a service to others (for a price) once I figure out the details.
