READ about the MINI PCI EXPRESS card being used in the OQO 02
If that is the interface for the WWAN card in the OQO 02 then you can change it out with another card from the same manufacturer for there various HSDPA cards which appear to be the same form factor and voltage! While I am sure one would void the warranty, some might consider this a viable option to get what they want from their OQO 02. This is what I am considering doing plus changing the Hard Drive to the new 64GB solid state drive from Seagate (FASTER than the old 32GB solid state drives)

I titled a topic wrong earlier so I am correcting with this new one.

very nice.

And here part 1 of my article: link

tnkgrl,
That's pretty amazing and highly cool. I have one quick question though. In order to have this mod done, one needs to have an 02 that is already configured with WWAN (either Verizon or Sprint) because you need to use the existing hardware (i.e. arial, etc). The mod would not work for owners of an 02 without WWAN. Is that correct? Justin

*weatheryoko*, I don't know for sure, but as I mentioned before in this thread, it should still be possible to do this mod on a Model 02 without WWAN.

There are 2 antennae for WWAN, and the external one is missing from the non-WWAN Model 02's - if the internal one is also missing, we have a problem, otherwise we're good to go!

The other part that could be missing and would be a problem getting is the Mini PCI Express ribbon cable.

*tnkgrl* there was this issue of not being able to have WWAN and Wifi on at the same time.
Have you been able to have your HSDPA modem and Wifi on at the same time (i.e. to provide your own Wifi hotspot)?

Wolfgang

tnkgrl nice write up and mod.

what is catching my eye is the rev a module card. do you think if i ordered one it will have an ESN already programed from manufacurer?

tnkgrl,
I see that you're with Cingular. I'm assuming that if you had a T-Mobile SIM, it would work too?
Justin

(of course on T-Mobile's network, you'd be limited to EDGE).

*wogaut*, I have WWAN and WLAN working at the same time - your mileage may vary

*wrecks*. every EVDO device (Rev. A or otherwise) is manufactured with a unique ESN which is then registered with either Sprint or Verizon... But you can't use a Sprint ESN on the Verizon network and vice-versa!

Likewise, every HSDPA device is manufactured with a unique IMEI, but since it's the SIM and not the IMEI that is registered with the network, you can switch providers without having to switch hardware. Some HSDPA devices are locked to accept only SIMs from certain providers, but that can generally be disabled.

*weatheryoko*, yes, it also works with T-Mobile (EDGE only).

tnkgrl said: "*wrecks*, you have to void your warranty by breaking the seal in the back - there are 3 torx #6 screws to remove... If you can't figure this out on your own before even opening the Model 02, then this mod is not for you - it gets a lot more complicated after that!

DISCLAIMER: don't blame me if you decide to try this mod and you f*ck up your Model 02."

A year or two ago, it was discussed that you could "have" your hard drive removed prior to sending the OQO to warranty repair based on the loop-hole that private company data is stored on the hard-drive. Is this bogus? Do companies really wave the voided warranty if you have such private company data on the hard drive?

The 01 oqo warranty sticker could be carefully removed with heat and a razer then reattached...is it the same sticker?

I don't know, I tossed it out

But that's a good point about removal of the hard drive possibly not voiding the warranty! Although the mod is significant enough that it's noticeable, even if you "undo" it...

Tnkgrl. The wifi module looks custom. Is it? Was wondering if I can put a mini wifi module i have from my laptop in there.

*wrecks*, the WiFi module is custom.

*tnkgrl* Yes I am bit lazy (you already know this ), so you are now runing the HSDPA on your OQO successfully? For how long? What's the battery time like?
