Hi all, this is from the rumor mill so it may or may not be on the mark....

Rumor has it that a Vaio UX follow-up may be on the way with an announcement pending for the 17th... Overheard specs at rumor time:

ULV Core2Duo CPU
64GB SSD
5-inch display
extended battery life

I don't know anymore, but as these things go, it could be on the mark or it could be nothing...

either way, fingers crossed!

I think it's too early for 64G SSD, not readily available and very expensive.

core2duo, and get even worse battery life? doubt it. plus if they wanted to make the device even smaller the C2D is still way to big.

they will be putting in the A110 like all modern UMPC'S are doing. which perform fine & are tiny plus provide super battery life.

When I first saw this rumor, I thought it sounded more like someone's wish list than a probable feature list. I still think so.
Time will tell, of course, but I'll wait for the usual FCC pre-release information before my interest will be piqued.

What month...and year?

It's the 17th of July now, anything new?

I thought something like this may be up when I saw the UX in the UK discounted by $800 (£400)

link removed - not working

I've only ever seen Sony do discounts like this when a model is due to be replaced.

I agree with MeanSquare on this one. While it sounds ideal... as Hite pointed out, the Core2Duo would be faster for sure, but would suck way more juice. If the battery isn't going to increase in size, then the extended battery life rumor can't be true. (pending any new break through in battery technology) I would love to see Sony come out with a clamshell design on par with the size of the FS. That or I hope FS can come up with a 1 or 2 gig model.

I think with Sony its more "been there done that" and the fact that they left that design (for good or bad?) would seem to me like they are not going back to it.. I DO believe though that a new modern Picturebook would sell quite well!

Teaser...

ecsk2 - Is that a UMPC?

I'll try again with the link to the discounted model, go to sonystyle.co.uk , then laptops

Ran into the pic when googeling SONY U101 out of all things, its really a Sharp W-ZERO3 over a year old now, a WinMobile5 device.

Here direct link:

I dont see a price reduction on the US site:

The UX380N seems to be AWOL from SonyStyle and the UX390N price has dropped at Frys and a few other brick-and-mortar locations. It may be in preparation for releasing another model _sometime_ after the price reductions have sufficiently reduced stock (and enhanced revenue )

It's anyone's guess what a 400 series UX (or, if Sony follows the conventions with the TX/TZ series laptops, a 400 series UZ) will feature in terms of hardware. Two thoughts on the dual core possibility, though: 1) The dual core is capable of running on a single core to reduce power consumption. If the power management were capable of both ramping down processor speed and shutting off one core, battery life might not be nearly so adversely affected. 2) The "cores" referred to are 64-bit processors instead of the 32-bit processor in the core-solo. That means, a dual-core "UZ" would probably be running 64-bit Vista(!) Even with just one core and the OS running with 64-bit processing, there should be a significant bump in performance.

I'm not holding my breath (as I stated earlier), but I will be watching to see what develops.

I hope for SSD and I sure hope they don't go to EVDO on it
I also want OQO 02 size and keyboard at least like the OQO 02 then I'd hold off on buying an OQO.
