So I'm looking at the Asus Eee 8G. Mainly because I think it will do what I need it to do, the size, touch-type keyboard, and the price tag of $499. Here's my question. I'm a writer and have been using XP Pro and Microsoft Word 2003 on my laptop. I see that Asus uses Linux for an OS and OpenOffice. Are these any good? Can I transfer files from my laptop to the Asus Eee 8G, or do I need to convert each Word file?

Thanks!

You should load XP into your Asus Eee and use Word if you are not familiar with Linux and OpenOffice. That will save you a lot of trouble. Dynamism can do it for you if you order the Asus Eee from them.

Hey, that's good to know. I had planned on ordering from Dynamism.

Thanks!

How much extra would it cost for Dynamism to install XP Pro?
Recent Blog: FS fan question

I have an e-mail into them now to find out.

If you do not need the features in XP Pro, just install XP Home. It will be much cheaper since Dynamism will charge you for the cost of the software.

This is an interesting article that gives some insight into the Asus Eee PC 701.

I have yet to hear back from Dynamism for the price of having them load XP onto the Asus for you.

Kirby,

FWIW, I had an eee for about 2 weeks, fun lil' lappy....

Not that big of a deal to get XP on it yourself if you have a CD burner and a XP install CD....

Best way is to download and install nlite app and then follow the guide on the website to make your own 'slimmed-down' XP install CD. Using that CD worked great for me and gives you more room on the eee for other things...nlite just lets you strip out stuff you don't really need from a typical XP install...

HTH,

Mark

Thanks, Mark. Dynamism e-mailed and said that they are still working out the cost, but it sounds like it will be $150, the cost of the XP license. Is there a special XP for the Asus?

Thank you again.

Sincerely,

Kirby
