Pretty much since the demise of the Newton. Seriously, if Mr Jobs ever gets off that particular part of his high horse and lets an Apple Mini go through, it's sure to have an interesting take on all sorts of things. If nothing else, it'll shake the presupositions of the more staid companies.

I think it would have to be. With all due respect to OQO and Sony, the screen is just a tad on the small size. There's this annoying dichotomy for handtops: It has to be small enough to take with you (all the time), but large enough to be be able to read/to be able to work with more than one window at a time/to be able to type on/etc.
This is one area where I think Apple (or some other really imaginative OEM or OS designer) could really shake things up. UMPCs are built on mostly the same assumptions as Tablet PCs in terms of user interface and input devices. There has been some imaginative attempts at re-doing the on-screen keyboard (like the Origami key fans) and some of the large-key input boxes used in some of the GPS programs, but that barely (pardon the phrase) scratches the surface.

I might consider giving up my OQO 02 if they do release a portable mac that's small enough.. Let's say 10 inches widescreen at the maximum.

If Apple comes out with something like that 10" screen or so and a dock within an iMac type monitor I think we might have a winner!

...can't argue there. A 10" screen would also make the unit large enough to take a decent-sized hard-drive (or better, a decent size or pair even(!) of SSD's).
Make it just thick enough to put in a (gigabit) Ethernet connector, several USB ports, external video connector (HDMI of course), sound in/out, docking connector and build-in WiFi and Bluetooth (like all the Apple notebooks have) and I'd be hard-put to leave it in the store.

I think its inevitable TG. With vista, and my dallying with the Craptastic Zune (technically the device is fine it's the software) I just about done with MS. Right now, I biding my time for the 3g iPhone, it has been hard to wait this long. After that, I'm phazing out windows- including my 01+ which is mostly dusty these days.
