So lots of new MIDs running linux which is good as it pushes the technology forward, but I've not seen much else interesting UMPC wise, ie with keyboard and able to run a microsoft OS. Not seen anything better than the OQO or Fujitsu u810, both of which are nearly a year old now.

OQO today announced at C.E.S. two new options for the 02:

Sunlight optimized display.
64GB SSD together with sunlight optimized display.

Sorry if this is old news, but it made my day, since my primary use for my old 01 has been GPS-ing, and sunlight view-ability is an absolute must-have.

edit: and sorry ecsk2; I see that you have already posted this. I didn't find out until I stopped by their booth.
Recent Blog: Travelling With the OQO

Kind of like how Steve was saying on UMPC Portal
"Its like a Grand Prix or the Tour de France, the best place to see all the action and to understand the current state-of-play is from afar!"

The LG is almost identical in size to the OQO 02 - just 6mm longer. But it weighs 150g more. But does the fan make lots of noise I wonder?

the extra weight is from a 5-hour battery, what does OQO weigh with the D-cap?

yep, both LG and Aigo/Gigabyte sliders will eat OQO alive ;)
same size, better batt life more performance .. and pricing! specially that Gigabyte one should be nicely priced:

me waiting to get hands-on!

btw. me and Steve have been doing daily podcasts about umpcs at CES : link

Waiting till summer I guess, because I dont think intel is shipping chips til April

This kind of tech could be revolutionary for the UMPC market, no!?

It kind of depends on what it actually is doesn't it? The article doesn't say.
I suspect it's some kind of screen magnifier. It could be great. It might be not-so-much. We'll see.
That said, display size is one of the constant issues with handhelds. You're always trying to find the optimum balance between small enough to carry with you all the time and large enough to be of real use. Currently, handheld OSes do one thing on the screen at once to maximize the use of the small space. Constant switching when you're using two apps is one of the trade-offs. Projectors are leveraging an actual image that is really quite tiny onto a large screen. With Digital Light Processors, you can do that and still get a throuroughly readable image. I could see the same technology get around the size/portability dichotomy, but you'd still have to have a display surface (either a blank wall or an eyeglass-type reticle).
So were there any actual things that looked like they were close to final products? The LG one did, but it looks to be available only outside the US. Most others seemed like concept designs, with no real specs or predicted release dates.

Q2, Q3 for the new models at best

did anyone report on this yet?

@DonDula yeah, here: link

What about this for the UMPC/MID market?

impressive, that would be pretty cool as a secondary display, since noone would want to be completely dependent on a flat surface as that sort of defeats the purpose of portability.

that real break-through is going to be when they come up with hologram projector that displays into midair.
