I have my fan speed on high. The keyboard still becomes very uncomfortable in a few minutes. Is there any settings so that the fan kicks on earlier? Any other suggestions? If not, I will have to return it. Thanks for any help.

Anybody else noticed that his FlipStart is too hot ?
(By the way I've just ordered mine but will only have it beginning of april when my friend brings it back from the US ;) )

mine does not get hot at all. I would contact flipstart on it. My unit runs with the fan on low.

Mine should arrive by FedEx today, WooHoo!

When I first got it, it was hot. I think it was Vista doing a bunch of disk indexing.

I've since adjusted search and indexing in the power settings and it remains a pretty comfortable temperature.

But at first it did seem a little warm, now not so much. I still love it, esp. now that I have EVDO turned on!

To get some realistic numbers for "hot" or "not" you can use SpeedFan
anything else that reads the FS' internal sensors.

(SpeedFan does not suppot FS' fans or chipset- all you can do is read HDD/core temp)

What I've found is:

* running CPU intensive programs tends to make it run hot (up to 60-70C)
* running graphics intensive (anything with 3D) will make it run hot

anything else shouldn't really be a problem- ambient core temps seem to stabilize around ~ 40-50C when busy,
and ~ 35-40C or so when idle.

Probably HDD access contributes to heat- I haven't found it makes a huge difference overall.

You can try fiddling with SpeedStep settings, either to improve battery life or temperature
but run a fair risk of actually damaging something if you're not careful-

Stick to the FS control panel, and don't use 3D or CPU-hungry apps for too long at a stretch,
and your FlipStart will be cool.

[What I'm not sure of....
is 70C a safe temp to run this beastie at?
is shutting down (standby or hibernation) for a cooldown break, periodically, more helpful or harmful to the internals?
is the temp gradient I've seen "normal" for the FlipStart, or does mine behaving outside of reasonable?]

the CPU I think is rated to 100C.... but the Intel chipset is set to go into "thermal protection" at ~ 70C I think...

Mine runs warm just turned on with the CPU close to 0% usage. The fan is set to high, but does not turn on for awhile. It is very warm if used while plugged into the charger. I have tries all the power settings. Also, if the fan turns on at 70C, would't the Flipstart get warm?

(sorry, going by memory- I don't have my FS with me, so these numbers may be a bit off)
with fan set to "noisy, cooler" I find it first turns on at ~ 45C
shifting into higher speed at ~ 60C or so.

at 70C, the chipset theoretically puts the CPU into "thermal protection"
- meaning it underclocks or does other things to prevent it from getting hotter and risking damage.

I haven't seen it actually do this, or behave differently past 70C (I very rarely let it get that hot anyway)
but Intel rates the CPU up to 100C.... perhaps with degraded performance

the condition of "Case feels warm" or "Case feels hot" seems to correlate with CPU temp > 40C
and probably moderate to high humidity and ambient temperature.

With low humidity and/or cooler room temperatures, the "Case feels warm" when CPU temp > 45-50C

My Flipstart runs cooler after I upgraded the Hard Disk which leads me to believe that the old one may have been causing more heat than I first thought.
