As I see it, and also from comments I see in other forums, The biggest problem with the FS is the memory being soldered in. It would have only cost a couple of bucks more for it to be socketed and at the original price point it would have been trivial. Especially since these are Windows machines and the more memory available the better Windows likes it.

Kieth, can you shed any light on the decision to not have upgradeable memory?

I can't speak specifically about all of the decisions made for FS. I can say that a socket adds size issues and there wasn't enough room to have one in the product. I know that bigger memory modules can be soldered to the board but I wouldn't attempt it myself.
