I can confirm another successful Flipstart Hard Disk upgrade. I replaced the 30GB one with a 60Gb Samsung HS06THB which has the following details:

Form Factor = 1.8"

Dimensions (WxDxH) = 2.8 in x 2.1 in x 0.2 in

Capacity = 60 GB

Interface Type = ZIF (ATA-100)

Weight = 1.7 oz

I purchased it from Ebay for $60 (£30 in my currency

Since I haven't received my external 1.8 ZIF to USB 2.0 caddy yet, I just used an external USB CD to boot to Windows XP on the Flipstart (after changing Bios settings), used the Recovery Console to format it and now I will boot up using Bart PE in a bootable USB Pen drive and use Drive Snapshot to restore a Clone of my OS.

any chance you took some pics?

I too would be grateful for any pics or sage words of wisdom regarding the procedure... I have the same drive en route (probably from the same eBay seller). Thanks.

Unfortunately I didn't take any pics at the time but I would have only had acess to a low quality 2MP camera anyway.

I am beginning to wonder if something was wrong with my old Hard Disk since this new one runs alot quieter and my Flipstart feels cooler during alot of disk activity. Maybe it is just a difference in design, this one also has more cache.

Don't forget to get rid of any static electricity that might be on you before you replace the hard disk, keep an eye on where you put the removed screws or better yet, put them in a safe place. You only need to remove the four black screws too.

Be careful when you remove the sticky orange tape on the Hard disk,make sure it does not lose the sticky touch or it will be useless because you need to reuse it. When you first lift of the back cover after removing the battery, the hard disk might be stuck to the top of the lifted cover because it fits into a boxed space when it is closed, be sure to carefully remove it and be careful with the ZIF cable because it is pretty weak looking. The Hard Disk will be upside down when installed correctly which of course becomes the right way up when you close the battery and turn the flipstart over for general use.

I got it!! I dealt with the stripped screws using the hammer/tap methods for FS #2 and got the 80 GB drive in there. Still having trouble with the stripped screw on FS #1.

I just threw away the yellow tape, I hope that doesn't come back to haunt me. Also, there is a small module in a corner under the back plate that comes right out, I was scared I had broken it, but it pressed it back in and it was fine. There is just barely too little space for an 8mm drive. Just barely. I tried one, and the bottom of he FS bowed out just a little, but probably too much to fit the batter back on.

Yea, the small module in the corner came out of mine too and and I also thought I had broken it but as you say, it pressed back in. I didn't think it would happen to others for some reason lol.

You are probably aware of the HS06THB 80GB model version which is called the HS082HB but it is really hard to get hold of. This one is not 8mm but is 5mm and will fit the Flipstart perfectly.

Have you noticed any differences in how hot your Flipstart runs? because mine now runs cooler as mentioned before.

I did use the 80GB model, and yep it fits. I haven't noticed a difference in heat, the fan still seems to run most of the time. If I can ever get that stripped screw out of the other one, I'll pop in the 60 GB and see if I get the same result as you.

Stupid question #843:

I got the new drive in just fine, but no matter what BIOS settings I choose, the USB CD-ROM is not detected.

What floppy/drive/letter settings should I have in BIOS? It's a mite confusing...

Thanks.

In the Bios, on the left side it should be Drive C: Ide 0/Pri Master, Boot Method Sector. Under Boot order where it says ''Boot First: Drive C::" change that to CDROM and then save the settings. This worked for me.

Yeah, I finally figured it out. The problem wasn't the BIOS settings, it was that I was using the DVD drive hooked up to the port replicator running off USB power, rather than ON AC and hooked directly to the unit.

Now: 55GB free.
