I'm looking for a used Flipstart - cheap, preferably... Anyone interested in selling? It's a for a special project! I've been using a borrowed one and it's turning out to be very hackable PM me.

@snowviper, maybe there's an additional ground?

There's a new post on my blog on how to mod the FlipStart for HSDPA.

Just FYI

@tnkgrl, and this blog would be where exactly?

@wodin just Google tnkgrl - it's the first result Or click on my name - it's the link in my profile.

@tnkgirl: Can AT&T 5520 works ? Is the PCI express card from dell.

By the way nice job on the transplant.

tnkgrl - Thanks for documenting this. Have you had much time to use the FS? Thoughts compared to other devices you have used (looks like you've been through a few!)?

Thanks tnkgrl, great videos, warts and all. I think the reason it didn't boot the first time is that you closed the cover and it went into standby in the middle of the bootup cycle.

Have you figured out the AT&T throttling yet? If it is indeed throttling smartphone plans it will make this link much less desirable.

My biggest reason for wanting to go to HSDPA is the twenty dollar no contract plan! Actually it's the no contract part!

@wodin I've been using the AT&T MEdia Net data plans for years now on everything from smartphones (both tethered and directly), data cards and built-in modems with both EDGE and HDSPA and I've never experienced this throttling (if that's actually what it is) ever before! So I'm not sure what was causing it - this throttling was gone later when I used my HP Mini-Note tethered to my Nokia N95-3...

It was either a network glitch, or AT&T is experimenting with something new that only applies to data cards and built-in modems (the mini-PCIe card I used for the mod has never caused me any problems in the past).
@mhoepfin the FlipStart is large (and ugly) compared to the OQO Model 02 - it's also RAM challenged (only 512 MB) and limited to 5 mm thin (single platter) 1.8" ZIF hard drives, vs. 8 mm (double platter) 1.8" ZIF hard drives...

However the FlipStart features a much better CPU and video card than the OQO Model 02, and there's more physical room for mods - the trackpad (in addition to the trackstick) and webcam are useful too!

@snowviper thanks Yes the Dell 5520 should work just fine, as long as you have the drivers.

Tnkgrl, from all of us out here with little technical background, I thank you for sharing yours.

Well, I finally got myself a Dell 5520 card on eBay and will be fitting it to DVT-154 soon; mine doesn't have the Sprint card installed (that I am aware), so I'm really hoping it is ONLY the card that it is missing, and not the antenna! Also got my forwarded box of goodies so I've got two cameras, two cases, two batteries, etc for it, and a rugged case. Yeay Dynamism and their little clearout!

Occurs to me that it'll soon be the 1st anniversary of my Flipstart landing on these shores.

Does anyone know if the AirCard 881U will work, and what makes this one better than the 875U?

Just from poking around on ebay, it looks like these run about $30 more. Is it worth it?

@wodin Look here: link

The 881U is supports HSUPA and HSDPA up to 7.2 Mbps. The 875U only supports HSDPA up to 3.6 Mbps... All this info is available on Sierra Wireless' website!

@tnkgrl Sorry, I missed that.

Is having HSUPA (4G?) worth the extra bucks even though I don't think AT&T has it here? Future upgrade perhaps? What kind of schedule do they have for rolling it out?
