I'm looking for a used Flipstart - cheap, preferably... Anyone interested in selling? It's a for a special project! I've been using a borrowed one and it's turning out to be very hackable PM me.

Wodin, on the 3g Watcher screen, I clicked on Tool>Connections>Profile>AT&T and typed the following:
Username: Wap@ cingulargprs.com
Password: Cingular1
APN: Wap.cingular
Recent Blog: Flipstart....so far so good

@nguyenallan that goes without saying The latest version of 3G watcher actually pulled my profile automatically from my Cingular 3G SIM (from 2006), just like my Nokia N95 does... But in the past (and on most unlocked phones) I've had to set it manually!

@wodin most branded/locked phones have this profile baked in.

@nguyenallan
Yup, that's got it!!! Thanks nguyenallan.

Hmmmm CNet speed test says 222.4 KPS

Opps the next test said 131 MB/sec, I don't think so!

269.2 .

I wonder if my USB hub might be slowing it down?

OK I plugged directly into the dock, had to unplug my hub to get it to fit.

OK that's 332.7, I think I'll be doing tnkgrl's hack

Thanks everyone!!!

@Tnkgrl: Which one is faster according to your test the FS or the U810 ?

Yea, mine is AT&T branded, but it's been unlocked. That's prolly the difference.

The speed test is a little disappointing, I wonder if there is another profile. "Username: Wap@ cingulargprs.com" seems to be a little "legacy" pointing to a GPRS tower.

Is there any way to tell what protocol you're actually using? 200-300 KPS seems closer to EDGE than to HSDPA.

Also Lastly, Is there a way to turn off that annoying warning box that says my account was charged 0.00 dollars?

@wodin once unlocked it's no longer branded (by branded I mean the firmware, not the hardware)... Also those speed differences are normal if you have marginal reception and/or are in a marginal 3G coverage area!

From the numbers it looks to me like you're getting basic 3G (UMTS, max 384 kpbs), not faster 3G (HSDPA)! Look for the 3G vs. HSDPA indicator on the 3G watcher. We know your download speed but what's your upload speed? Use this - link

No USB hub in the world is going to slow you down - be realistic, even USB 1.0 reaches 14 Mbps, that's plenty enough to achieve HSUPA speeds Just FYI I got over 2 Mbps down and over 300 Kbps up with my Nokia N95 last night (fastest performance ever, and tethered via WiFi, even, using JoikuSpot - link .

Proper settings are (note the capitalization):
- Username: WAP @ CINGULARGPRS.COM (no space around the @)
- Password: CINGULAR1
- APN: wap.cingular

But if you can get online, it's working already FS vs. U810: don't know... The annoying dialog is a byproduct of pay as you go! Look into the settings for a way to turn of SMS or OTA notifications.

@tnkgrl,

Yes, thanks again, I'm on line. The numbers above were from home where I was getting a strong five bars, and HSDPS indicatied in the watcher.

Unfortunatly I'm at work now, and am barely getting one bar, the watcher says "EDGE" and speeds are abysmal; like around 10 KPS.

I tried running speakeasy, but it wanted a newer version of flash player. When I tried installing it, I got fatal errors. I'll try again when I get a better connection.

@wodin, maybe your area has marginal 3G coverage - 5 bars does not guaranty megabit speeds.
@tnkgrl

My employer has enough leverage with AT&T to dictate repeater loactions and services. As the person who approves hundreds of Blackberries, I was assured by the AT&T corporate rep that the whole Island and most of the state was upgraded to HSDPS last summer. That would also be consistant with the coverage map.

The problem in my office is rebar, it's a WWII historical building with two foot thick concrete walls. I'm lucky to get what I get!

@Wodin

There is another one is I'm not mistaken : isp AT NOSPAM cingulargprs.com (do a search just to make sure)
I'am 100% positive on the isp part but after @ part that the one that I'm not sure.

This setup is for laptop connect (I use to have it and that my login).

well I got home last night and loaded up Flash Player 9 and got on link . It ran 640 and change download and 4 hundred something upload.

Now those are numbers I can live with.

OK I took about thirty minutes to do tnkgrls hack this morning, and there are a couple of differences in the MC8781.

1. The antenna is glued to the MiniPCI card with a piece of foam. You need to peel that off.
2. The MC8781 has two antenna connections, a ‘MAIN’ and an “AUX” like the EVDO Rev A card that comes with the FS. You can connect both antenna wires.

It took the FS and inordinarily long time to find the network, and when it did I got an EDGE connection (I’m at work so that’s expected) and it’s even slower than it was yesterday. Both FireFox and Outlook are timing out while waiting for data. I did get Google IG (my homepage) to come up once but it was touch and go. I’m thinking that the CDMA antenna(s) are miss matched to the GSM modem.

I'll go outside and see what happens there.

I went outside and was able to get an HSDPA connection. Speakeasy said 569 KPS down and 389 KPS up.

I'm really disappointed in the lack of signal at my desk. One of the things I like about Sprint is I can get a solid EVDO signal here.

I have 2 flipstarts: one with Sprint evdo rev a card and the other one with hsdpa card (tnkgrl mod). I did the speed tests and they were 468/187 for Sprint and 670/324 for AT&T hsdpa (I usually get higher readings when I am outside of my house). I loaded CNN, NY times, Youtube web pages and noticed that both were equally fast.

Where I live (Orange County, CA), Sprint coverage is better...I get solid signal everywhere. AT&T 3g coverage is kind of spotty here…but I love the $20/month plan. I am gonna cancel the Sprint service soon. Tnkgrl, thanks for the flipstart mod video.

Tnkgrl, have you tried to pair your iphone with n95-3 using the Joikuspot? Is it fast? I gave the iphone to my brother (he lives in another state) so I couldn’t try them. I am debating whether I should buy the new 3g iphone or just buy the ipod touch and pair the touch with my n95-3. I really like the Safari web brower but I hate the iphone's poor reception and low ringtone volume.
