I have had so many problems trying to install my old Flipstart 1.8 Zif Hard disk drive into an external USB caddy that I thought I would share with you a foolproof method.
It is very simple, cut two bits of card board to place on either side of where you grip the Zif ribbon. This provides support to both sides keeping the cable straight so that when you push it in to the caddy Zif cable, the cable does not bend and the force only goes in as opposed to the cable bending so less force to push the cable in.
