Remember the time when notebook computers were unrealistically expensive propositions? You needed a 2nd or 3rd computer, but ended up settling for a budget desktop instead? Fast forward to the present and it’s all change - the advent of the budget notebook computer has made its addition as a 2nd or 3rd computer a very realistic solution. In the past, mainstream notebook computers were anywhere between 50% and 100% more expensive compared to their mainstream desktop counterparts. Currently, that difference has shrunk to between 20% and 40%. The lower pricing of current notebooks has fueled the category’s explosion in popularity.

Despite the notebook’s far more affordable pricing, very few of us have the luxury of making purchasing decisions without weighing our options thoroughly. That’s why it’s important for a potential buyer to know whether a notebook makes the most sense for his/her purposes. In this document we cover just what the notebook computer brings to the user.

I. Features of the Notebook Computer

The most obvious advantage of the notebook computer is its mobility. Currently, mainstream notebooks average out at between 4 and 7lbs. A desktop – peripherals included – can weigh in the area of 20lbs. There are also Ultra Thin-and-Light notebooks that weigh approximately 2lbs and will fit into just about any briefcase.

In the past, notebook computing was synonymous with high cost and low performance. Thanks to never-ending technological development, contemporary notebook computers enjoy performance on par with their mainstream desktop counterparts. This allows the notebook user to not only complete their work at maximum efficiency, but to enjoy the many other entertainment and multimedia abilities of the modern computer without penalty. That’s right: thanks to the level of technology in modern processors, video cards and many other components, the notebook has all the built-in the multimedia capabilities the common user needs. This way, the notebook computer becomes a true entertainment tool that will easily tackle music, videos, DVD movies and demanding 3D PC games.

Low voltage processors, video cards and components all contribute to notebook computers that run cool and offer improved battery life. Currently, most notebook computers will run for 4-5 hours on a single charge; an achievement and standard unimaginable in just the recent past.

Wireless everything is popular these days. Today’s notebook computers feature built-in Wireless LAN cards that allow the user to conveniently connect to the Internet where a Wireless signal is present.

II. Value

For the business/professional user, a notebook computer has power enough to complete all but the most specialized type of tasks (e.g. video editing, graphics design). The notebook computer will also go anywhere they go, be it office meetings in the room next door or field presentations. When on the plane during business trip, a user can equally use the notebook for work, or when relaxing, enjoy a tune or two or watch DVD videos.

Students will find that the notebook computer not only helps with projects and in class tasks such as notes taking, that same notebook will also double up as a source of after-hours entertainment. Today’s notebook knows no limit when it comes to games, music and DVD video (built-in DVD ROM required)!

When at home, the notebook computer does it all - browse the internet, entertain yourself for play games, but the greatest benefit is found in its ability to operate in any part of the home, be it the bedroom, terrace, living room and even kitchen thanks to its inherent mobility.

Conversely, a user who is bound at his or her desk each and every day will find that there is limited value from selecting the notebook computer. This demographic will find greater benefit in a more affordable desktop computer, which can make a lot of sense. Should that change, and the user moves into a more mobile work environment, a notebook can make all the difference in the world in terms of function (wireless networking) and convenience (mobility). In any case, the notebook computer is as much a life style statement as it is a tool for high work performance and a multitude of entertainment experiences. The desktop computer is a dinosaur, a failing part of the industry that is only making it now through sales pressure and hugh government subsidise. The laptop is lasting longer because people like the design and use it as a desktop replacement but as a technology is falling by the wayside. It will follow the desktop into obivion within the next 5-10 years. The present and future is the handtop. The handtop has shown itself to be highly everything. Highly portable, highly exspandible, highly useable, pretty much everything a person needs which can be taken along as a person goes just like a cell phone. It will never be replaced by the smart phone. The computer industry is slow to change, like any industry, but facts are facts. People demand the handtop over all others and the market for the laptop and desktop is sliding down the hill, ending with a boom. They have served their purpose and should, naturally, be placed honorablly in museums where they belong.

Don’t know where you get the idea that desktops are kept alive by government subsidy, in my part of the world, the government does no subsidise the purchase of any computer products, and desktops still represent about 50% of all sales. A simple reason for that, value for money coupled with the fact that most people who use a computer in business will never need to move it.

With Global sales of Laptops on the rise (the only sector of the industry to see and increase in sales through these bad times), and with Handtops a most precarious situation at present, I am a bit baffled as to where you might have obtained your “information”.

Please don’t get me wrong, I am delighted that Handtops will finally be taking over, banishing the Dinosaurs of Desktops and Laptops to the dusty pages of history. OQO will spring again phoenix like from the ashes, the FlipStart will be revived with better specs, and harmony will have been re-introduced to the universe.

It always surprises me that a race that has been around for a maximum of a few million years (us) uses as an example of a failed species dinosaurs, who existed and ruled the earth for well over 250 million years, and who are still with us today in the form of birds. (Watch out for that chicken, he is related to T-Rex, really!)

Handtops have a way to go until they can replace desktop and laptop systems. Although many have predicted the demise of the desktop many times, it is still with us, and new and innovative designs are being produced every year. Today I saw a news item on a desktop unit smaller than an external 3.5” drive. Very neat!

I look forward to the improvement of Handtops, more fervently than most, but I cannot see them replacing desktops. Desktops have too many other applications such as home entertainment centres etc. Laptops might eventually go, but only when technology has come up with a way to display large screens from a handtop.
