I switched from OQO to U70 ;)
Here is my impression about u70 so far.
1. It's fast.
2. It's heavy.
3. It's big! Un-pocketable.
4. 802.11g is fast and has a good reception!
5. U70's LCD is bright and sharp. Also, 800x600 is good ;)
6. u70 is quieter than OQO
7. The stylus sucks.
8. The cradle is very functional, not just a stand.
9. U70 looks ugly
You should try both if you are interested. Both of them are not perfect and they are just different! Anyway, I'm now an U70 owner. Call me a trader ;)

U101 pricing is unfathomable. I remember a period in my life where I had the U101 on my mind more than anything else ever. I was searching sites, asking strangers questions. Those were heady days. I still remember the adrenaline rush.
The U101 was sweet.
Maybe the OQO Model 01 will fetch such high prices some day.
fil, whats up with all of that space on the side of the screen though. The new U's could have been a lot smaller than they are now however I guess Sony hides a long range wifi antenna inside that extra space. Even with that they did not have room for bluetooth.

I thought that too.
The hardware buttons could have been fully removed for all I care, I only use the rotation button but I'd be fine with a software icon that rotated the screen (like with my 2215's rotation software NYDITOT).
If you have access to it, there are internal photos of the Sony U50 guts are loaded up at YahooGroups ( link ) and they show a very densely packed motherboard.
Unless Sony wanted to make the U50 thicker (which I think was the batter way to go), this appears to be the smallest Sony can make the U-series.

Isn't it something that the mighty Sony Corp could not do something smaller than the little boys from OQO. hehe.

Sony is a lot like HP--they innovate once in a while, but they stay fairly conservative and develop achieveable technology. Based on Sony's history and technology, they make incremental changes to their technology and slowly innovate technology without over reaching their experience--Picturebooks-->TR-->T and U1-->U3-->U101-->U50--U70-->U750P-->U71P. For example, the U50 technology was derived from the U101 and the U50 size is more than 50% smaller than the U101 with a faster processor. link
The U50 thru the U750P are only incremental changes with the processor and battery life (based on the processor).
I heard you the first time you stated "the mighty Sony", it resonated, and I agree with your comment, but the more I think about it I believe that Sony hasn't made a smaller UPC because they don't believe that the right technology or components are there to build it yet.
With all of the issues facing the OQO, it really does seem like limitations to currently available technology.
For example, Sony won't go back to Transmeta. They've made that mistake already and they're not repeating that processor selection mistake (until Transmeta gets their act straight).
All of Sony's recent notebooks use the Intel® Pentium processor. link (Compare all notebooks)
The battery life issue is huge, but hopefully better power cell technology will appear in the next 5 years.
Toshiba has just now announced the availability of larger and faster hard drives (30, 40, 60, and 80Gb).
I believe the current U-series is another Sony experiment--
1. To see if North America is serious about wanting tiny gadgets like Japan.
2. To see if a mini-tablet style device will work or if we are all too accustomed to keyboards (this has been answered....we need them, integrate a keyboard to your UPC Sony).
Hopefully, Sony will use their vast experience with PDAs (UX series), their multimedia experience, and subnotebook experience to continue to slowly innovate based on the currently achieveable technology.
It's funny I'm defending them, if you look at some of my posts at Brighthand, you'll see that I'm not always a Sony fan. They make huge mistakes, but at this point every vendor has wronged us customers.
For one, I don't care if Sony, OQO, Flipstart, or some unnamed and upcoming company wins in the UPC space. I just want all of the features and performance in the Sony U50 (USB2, Pentium M, built-in 802.11b/g, native screen rotation, XBrite screen at 800x600, passive digitizer touch screen, and CF slot) in the OQO pocketable form factor with built-in Bluetooth, built-in keyboard, +5 hour battery life, and a huge hard drive (60+ Gb).
Someone build that and I'm the first customer.
I did that with my HP iPAQ 2215. I owned a 3955, which had the same specs as the 2215, but the 2215 was tiny and pocketable. After 2 years, I still own and use it because it's great little (pocketable thus I carry it almost everywhere) device with SD and CF slots.
So OQO accomplishing this feat isn't funny, it's awesome. I wish their execution was better.

I'm a long-time user of Sony products, including their PDAs, desktops & notebook computers. At times, I've been quite angry with some of the things that Sony has done. What I have found, however, is that their products are reliable & well-made. And that's why my first foray into the hardtops world was with the U. After using it for a week & a half, I've been more than satisfied with my choice. Honestly, the size doesn't bother me. About the only 2 things that I would like to see is the ability to boot from any USB drive (and not just the expensive Sony one or having to jump thru hoops to do a network boot - damn Sony) and a larger hard drive. I have no desire for a built-in keyboard: hated them on a PDA.

That's today. Don't count them out. Do any of you know that the Playstation was planned *before* the chip fab (one million gates!) for its specialized CPU was even commercially available? Its creator, Katagi -- next in line to lead Sony, btw -- had that foresight. I'd be very surprised if Sony didn't *already* have plans for smaller than the current U.
And if you look at the final CLIE they spit out -- in Japan only -- it has the screen slide-up design of the OQO. Hello!
