A new handtop by Nokia that isn't a phone... read more @ link and link and another link
Replies

its not really a handtop, it does look alright but personally i'm waiting for nokia's N91 if i buy a phone. If they wanted to make an internet device it should at least have some decent storage space or at absolute minimum a CF slot or something that would let me have some storage.

It does look quite cool though. I wouldn't ever buy something like this but i want this one for some reason.

illucid, why don't you think it's a handtop? Just curious.

It looks pretty close to everything that I want in a handtop. I'd just like to see something with more powerful graphics hardware.

It's a handtop size, but lacks the PC functionality...so I guess it could be a handtop, but definitely isn't in the same league as the oqo other than size and screen resolution. It's kinda in a category of its own sorta. It's not a phone. It's not a computer, not a pda, not a pocket pc, but a linux box that has some cool features to surf the internet with wifi and do other stuff.

I have been lusting after this one for a while and bought one last night when they became available on the US site. It told me it would ship 11/17, but going to the site again it has reverted back to the prior"coming soon" page, so I hope I am still slated to get my order filled.

I think it's a great little toy for doing some surfing around the house or anywhere you have access to wifi.

Nokia's got 770 followups in the works

When we heard Nokia's got followups to their 770 in the works, we weren't exactly surprised. They had, after all, more or less stated intentions to further the line after its first run in the US and abroad. Apparently they'll be answering the 770 fanboys' prayers (or at least our own, anyway) by adding a full QWERTY keyboard to the device; Nokia was also sure to mention they're on track to launch with Google-based VoIP (via Talk, perhaps?).

Current news: link

We've known since February that Nokia was working on a QWERTY-sportin' followup to the 770 Internet tablet, and now the Wall Street Journal has confirmed that the included VoIP app will indeed be, as we anticipated, Google Talk. Unfortunately this means that the device will still be unable to call regular phone numbers out of the box, although G Talk members will at least be able to chat among themselves for free. The WSJ is also reporting (only to its subscribers, not to us) that sources close to Nokia have said that the new device will be officially unveiled on Tuesday, and sell for around $390 when it hits stores.

Interesting... I suppose it's a good thing I sold my Nokia 770 a couple weeks ago! I liked it but was using my OQO more - I also sold my Sony Ericsson W800i phone and picked up the incredible Nokia N80 phone which was just released

Darn I would have been all over your w800 for the great pics you posted from it.

It really depends on what a handtop is. I believe a a handtop is a device that can be operated in a practical manner while being held with one hand, use the same software as a notebook/desktop, be operated as a desktop (support keyboard/monitor/mouse), use the same peripherals and drivers as a notebook/desktop. If you grant that Linux for ARM processors is the same as Linux for 386 computers then the only this missing from this device is monitor support and some sort of standard i/o to sipport peripherals such as USB host.

*Picasso*, sorry! The N80 features both a 3 megapixel fixed-focus camera with macro & flash and a front-facing VGA camera (vs. a single 2 megapixel autofocus camera with macro & flash on the W800i)... So don't worry, both phones take very impressive pictures
