HTC Shift - the Model T?
Author: GreatDane | Tags: UMPC, Handtops
Every market needs a “Model T Ford” to impart momentum and propel it to critical mass. This is rarely the invention that started the whole thing of, but most usually the mass market unit that is affordable and catches the public's attention and imagination. It is not inconceivable that the HTC Shift is one such product.

Inventions tend to come in clumps. Circumstances often produce a number of different inventions addressing a similar problem all within a short time period. It is axiomatic t

Shipping delays

Shipping delays – the bane of the computer industry.

As a software developer, I know all about shipping delays, and the almost super human effort that goes into trying to avoid them, to no avail. Murphy is alive and well and visits almost daily.

Although not alone in suffering from this problem, the computer industry tends to be beset by it more often than most, and more often than not, for that matter.

Shipping delays can be caused by any number of factors, ranging from natural disast

OQO Model 02 hands on
Author: tnkgrl | Tags: Model 01+, OQO, Model 02, pictures
A few days ago I was lucky enough to get my hands on a couple of preproduction OQO Model 02’s, batteries, a power supply, and a dock. I was also able to do a size comparison with a couple of OQO Model 01+’s…

Here are some pictures with descriptions - enjoy

Here is the video in which I compare the size and screen brightness of a c

UMPC newspaper article
Author: bhj1 | Tags: OQO, Sony VGN/U, FlipStart
There's an interesting, but short, article in this morning's "Tech Section" of the San Jose Mercury News. The article is about UMPC's and mentions the FlipStart, Samsung Q2, Sony & OQO. Not a very enlightening article for those of us that are regular forum readers/upmc owners. But, at least it's putting out some info for the general public.

One of the persons interviewed stated that the small keyboards can actually cause "injuries!" Umm, you FlipStart owne

Interview with FlipStart's Keith Amodt
Author: captain | Tags: Keith Amodt, interview, FlipStart
Thanks to all of you for the great FlipStart questions. Rather than make it a one time thing, I'll be taking follow-up questions which we can hopefully get answered as well.

Q: Who are you targeting with the E-1001S?

A: We see the FlipStart being used by mobile professionals, mobile executives, and other mobile workers who require of full-power applications in an extremely portable form-factor.

[b]Q: Will it be possible to upgrade the FlipStart, either at time of purchase or oth

UMPC, Handtop or micro sub-notebook?
Author: GreatDane | Tags: UMPC, Handtop, sub-notebook
When is a hand top computer a Handtop, when is it a UMPC, and when is it a micro sub-notebook?

The definition that follows of the UMPC is from various sources including Microsoft, but the definitions used here for Handtops and micro sub-notebooks are my own, based on what seems to be a general consensus. If I got them wrong, my apologies in advance.

Microsoft defined the UMPC more or less as follows:

"A lightweight, small tablet PC with an on-screen keyboard. Weighing two pounds

Gaming on the FlipStart E-1001S
Author: captain | Tags: FlipStart, Second Life, WoW, game
Chances are you're not buying a FlipStart to play games on it, which is just as well because Vulcan isn't targeting gamers. But let's face it, if you've got the smallest geek bone, you'll want to try out gaming on this tiny Handtop. While the OQO and Vaio UX have left a lot to be desired, as you'll see in this review, with actual in-game screenshots, the FlipStart is more than just capable at playing games, you'll actually be able to have a go at your favorite MMO, RTS, FPS and others. Do we need a new Psion?
Author: GreatDane | Tags: UMPC
Do we need a new Psion? This is a question that keeps popping up in various Blogs and threads, often sidetracking the main thrust of the articles.

I know that writing anything on this subject is contentious, but at least if there is a separate Blog for the topic, it might keep the argument out of other threads.

I must warn that, if tackled on this subject, I will not only plead complete ignorance regarding the entire matter, but will deny ever writing about it at all!

The Psion ty

FlipStart E-1001S Benchmarks
Author: captain | Tags: FlipStart, benchmark
Numerical benchmarking is really only useful when you can compare against other devices that are in the same class. With handtops being as new as they are, there's really only the OQO to compare to. However, comparing numbers with the OQO wouldn't be fair since the two are a few years apart, and we don't have a OQO model 02 to benchmark. Add to this the fact that the focus of handtops isn't about performance so much as form factor and the purpose of benchmarking the FlipStart becomes somewha
