IPad may kill Handtops
Author: GreatDane | Tags:
The past two years have been pretty dismal as far as Handtops are concerned. The Vulcan FlipStart and OQO are no more, the Sony UX is gone, replaced by the beautiful, but possibly not Handtop P series, and the Fujitsu U820 is also gone. The offerings at present for the most part sport low spec set-ups to try and attract Johnny Public’s money, and the promise of a true laptop replacement in your pocket has evaporated in the winds of change.

So what has that all got to do with the Apple iPad, a

Why the iPad (iTampon) should be boycotted
Author: diJenerate | Tags: marketing, crap, ethics, Apple, ipad, immoral
The 'genius' of Jobs is to take other people's work, brand it Apple then market the crap out of it to the mainstream (read: those oblivious of the Industry) as a new creation. This clearly works for them (8.7Million iphones last quarter) and shows the mainstream are made of really dumb people.

- The name 'iPad' is a trademark of Fujitsu Global, so look out for that war in the coming weeks. (Apple has absolutely no

What I did NOT see at CES 2k10

This was originally posted at Micropctalk.com but I thought Handtops.com would be a more appropriate forum....

"...So CES 2010 is over and we have seen a barrage of e-book readers and Tablet/Slates from everyone and their grandmothers... We have seen everyone's take on 3DTV... We have seen that when Mr. Gates retired from Microsoft, innovation retired with him - A direct quote from [url=http://www.engadget.com/]Engadge

Where are the Bold concepts?
Author: GreatDane | Tags:
I bought my first Handtop because it was a bold, world changing idea of a device, even if it did not work all that well, all that often, and for that matter, for all that long. In spite of all that, it changed my world.

I was a relative latecomer to the Handtop party. I was first intrigued by the original concept of the FlipStart. When that had not arrived after a year or so, I bought an OQO Model 01+ instead. Since then I have owned a couple of different Handtops.

Why?

Because the con

Couple nice handtops on the market

I'd like to mention, the Sharp Netwalker and the UMID mbook M1.

The Sharp in my opinion is the superiour of the 2. Runs a stock version of Ubuntu on a 800 MHz ARM, has wifi, usb, 5" screen, nice keyboard, clamshell design about 6 by 4 by 3/4 of an inch. It should be a nice fast well designed computer with plenty of memory and storage space for programs. Runs windows very well in an emulator so runs windows programs that are unavailible for Ubuntu. I'm planning on getting one and inst

The Future - rebuild the past
Author: GreatDane | Tags:
Everyone has a favourite handtop device. I have two in fact, the OQO model E2, and my much loved ugly duckling FlipStart. Both were great in there day, (well, good at least) but both are now a bit long in the tooth.

At present, there does not seem to be a suitable replacement for either of these units, but at the same time, they are both in need of a refresh. And this is where I believe that there might be a fairly profitable business opportunity out there. Build the future by re-building uni

To build the "perfect" Handtop
Author: GreatDane | Tags:
The last two years have brought sharply into focus for me a burning question, not “who makes the perfect handtop?", but rather “what would constitute the perfect handtop?”.

Having lived with a variety of cell phones, an OQO, a Flipstart and a couple of smaller laptops, all of which I use in various different ways, it has become apparent that, for me at least, there is no single “perfect” device, and that at very least I would have to have two units to fulfill all my requirements. The fi

Raon Digital hasn't officially announced it as yet and but it looks like they have one upped everyone else in the Handtop sphere with the world's first 64-bit Dual Core Handtop. If released, this will be the most powerful 7-incher and the most p
