From various comments it seems folks here are generally down on vista for handtops. I've never tried vista, but from what I read, it runs as fast as XP if you have aero turned off. The readyboost feature sounds like it should be a definite advantage, especially considering a slow hard drive. I've been planning on oredering my OQO-2 with Vista with that as one reason. I have the impression others don't see it this way, so I'm wondering why.
Anyone care to throw in their 2 cents?

IMO there is a lot of speculation and opinions about how Vista might run. Then there are lots of speed tests also being shown around. I would like to see real life usage of Vista on the 02. I have used Vista on a very well spec laptop (with all the eye candy) and I was disappointed. I hope Vista is tweaked for the 02. I believe there was some tweaking done by the OQO ppl for XP on the 01+

Also keep in mind that a memory card has a lot slower transfer speed then a HDD, it only has faster access time. That is why it is recommended for faster standby, so it does not have to spin up the HDD it can immediately get data from the card.

Lets get an SSD in the 02.

The 02 would be inconvenient to use with ReadyBoost... since there is no SD slot you'd have to have a USB fob hanging off it on the bottom which I think would get in the way.

there are some tiny usb drives which I thought would be unobtrusive enough:

I run Vista on my Sony UX handtop, but I don't use ReadyBoost because I have a Solid State Drive. ReadyBoost is essentially a cache for the pagefile. (The two work together.) In the case of the a slow hard-drive (as on most handtops), it can help a great deal, but with a Solid State Drive, it's not only superfluous, it actually slows things down.

The obvious tweak with Vista is to turn off many of the cute features in Aero. That helps, but there are also a lot of services you can shut down and speed things up even more. (I recommend TweakVI, which does this without requiring the user to work regedit or other not-for-amateurs system applications.)

I may be in the minority, but I think Vista offers so much "under the hood" that it's worth putting on my handtop and anything else I'm using. Unfortunately, it does require some tweaking, but you can get it to be as responsive as (also tweaked XP) and still get the real benefits of the new OS.

Thanks MeanSquare,
nice to hear that at least there's somebody out there that doesn't think Vista on a handtop is crazy.
and of course a solid state drive for the OQO would be great, so I'm jealous in that respect.

If you haven't seen this page already, I thought it did a nice evaluation of superfetch and readyboost:

You get the most benefit of readyboost if you're going to be swapping memory, but even without there is a little benefit.

Thanks Kenrick. I read the article with interest. Their protocol (step 1, wait 2 minutes...) left me still puzzled about whether their are real world benefits. Have you tried the readyboost strategy?
Also have you had any problems like what JKonTheRun has described as "disc thrashing' episodes where Vista suddenly stops you dead in your tracks doing something it deems important involving disc access?

I tried readyboost, but didn't really stress the system in a way that would speed things up so I didn't notice a big difference in performance. I haven't really noticed disk thrashing, but once in a while Vista will freeze up for a few seconds. Not sure if it's the VIA CPU or Vista or what I'm doing. It doesn't happen very often, though. I also restricted indexing to my onenote files and turned off sidebar.
