I would like to report on my first week with FS.
I am a gadget freak and so far FS did not disappointed me. Machine runs smooth, quiet and not too warm. I run the Vista Business and so far the limited memory did not give me real headache. The Vista is OK, but does not seem a real improvement over XP. It froze reliabli a few times already. Connectivity is great and runs smooth. I just love the feel and the texture of the machine. I was always partial to the clamshell design, I even had the Sony UX palm device. My first favorite was the small IBM that they had almost 10 years ago. My next was the Sony first ux and now the FS. The design ist just perfect for using the machine comfortably even when you are standig or walking. The screen is really great even for a guy of my age (50) with spectacles and so on. I gave already a few presentations from the FS without any problem. It is perfect to play a game whenever I have a few minutes idle, ( I run The Longest Journey, Dreamfall and Simpsons Hit&Run currently, no problem with gaming either). So far I foud only one issue to gripe about: the touch stick is not as accurate as the IBM machines had it and even though it clicks when you press down on it it has no associated function. I asked FS, so far they have no plans to upgrade on this one. The screen image is great, easy to see from most angles. Machine feels solid inside and out. Controls and keys logical with good feedback ( I love the fact that keypad light has ambient light sensing so it turns on only when it is dark). Nice click not too small buttons. I also love the fact that this is a home grown machine.

Give Vista some more time, you will see it's improvements as you use it. Unlike XP, it's not one massive change that's immediately obvious, it's more a myriad of small changes here and there. I literally get irritated if I have to use an XP machine after using Vista now, my productivity with Vista is significantly higher because of all the little improvements M$ made.

Thanks. Looking forward to hearing more.
Recent Blog: FS fan question

I agree everything pappde wrote about FS. This cool toy rocks. I am really impressed with the Sprint EVDO signal strenght on the FS...always get 3-4 bars wherever I go. The touchpad sometimes becomes non responsive especially when the computer wakeup from stanby...I have to shut down and dettach the battery and restart to get it to work again. Wonder that happens to other FS unts as well? The LID external screen is not really a cool feature as I have thought it woud be. Can't wait to get the thinner battery that is still on back order.

Too bad. I thought that the LID had some potential.
Recent Blog: FS fan question

can you guys please elaborate on the fan? the OQO2 from what I hear gets really loud when its doing CPU intensive applications. (gaming)
can you please tell us about the flips fan?
thanks

There are 2 fan settings: low fan speed and hotter computer or high fan speed but cooler computer. Even at high fan speed setting, you can barely hear it. I set to high speed when the computer is plugged in and low fan speed when it runs on battery. I don't have have OQO 02 ( plan to get one when the OQO have more units avail for faster shipping) so I cannot really compare fan sounds.

I have to say that I was reluctant to buy the FlipStart after hearing all of the negative comments on here and some other sites, but I took the plunge anyway and I'm so glad I did. I LOVE my FlipStart. I also have a Sony UX390 and although the Sony has a few extra bells and whistles that I'd love to see on the FlipStart, they don't outweight the benefits of the FlipStart's better keyboard, battery life, display and built-in EV-DO modem. I'm getting at least 3 hours and sometimes 4 hours of Internet surfing time w/my FlipStart. It's a little heavier than the Sony, but it's worth it for the extra battery time. I could probably get the same time with an extended battery for the Sony, but that battery makes the Sony keyboard unusable.
I use my FlipStart to access my company email server and I'm able to easily compose/respond to email messages as quickly as I can on my Blackberry 7250. My eyes don't hurt after using the FS like they do when I use the Sony and the keyboard is SO MUCH better. The built-in EV-DO modem works really well and I actually get better signal with my FS than I do my Verizon Treo (I live in San Diego where both have great signals). The fan noise on the FS is noticeable, but no more so than my Sony Vaio laptop (yes, I have too many gadgets). I wish the touch-stick was a little easier to use (it's better on the Sony), but the track-pad works great and I probably use it more than the touch-stick.

Just thought I'd share some feedback with you. I don't work for FlipStart and it's definitely not perfect, but it's a much better device than I think the online blogs and reviewers (Laptop Magazine, PC Mag., etc.) have said. I do agree though that it would be much more attactive if the price was only $1K. Then again, it still cost less than my Sony UX390 and about the same as a Best OQO model 2.

Hi sdscorp67,

Nice feedback, thanks for your views.

Like most who have had the FlipStart for a week or more, I am still very impressed. I have but two complaints- the thickness and the dual color. I wish it was all black. The EVDO is great- I have only found one place where it doesn't get a good signal (my bathroom in our condo). I've been in parking garages, lower levels of buildings and out in the sticks, and still 3-4 bars and no problems. I average about 4 hours and 15 minutes per charge, 90 percent of that time surfing the net. I got the XP version, which seems to work as well as my work computer, possibly a little more reliable. Yes, it is a bit of an ugly duck, but it does what it's supposed to, and that says alot. I haven't had a need for the LID yet, except to show it off. If it had MP3 or other capabilities, I would probably use it more.
One last note, I ordered the slim-line battery and still haven't got it! They should have made that the main battery, and the extended life the option. The way I use the FlipStart, a charge lasts me two days (of approximately 2+ hours of use per day). I want the slim battery now please!!!

Hi jimscraft, I just got an email from FS today saying that the slim battery is now shipping. Can't wait....

nguyenallen,

I too received a notification on Friday about the slimline battery being shipped. I hope it comes today or tommorow!

I received the slimline battery yesterday, and while the weight may not be that big of a difference (although noticible), the look of the FlipStart with the slim battery is much better. The batteries are not too different thickness-wise, but the little amount seems to make the FlipStart look like it went on a diet. I juiced the battery and then surfed the net for 45 minutes, and the battery indicator (on the battery) still showed three bars. I forgot to check the internal battery indicator, so it's probably less than 75 percent (possibly 60-70). Still, I believe it was worth the investment, at least in terms of how I will be using the FlipStart!

The slimline battery is 1/2 as thick and weighs 1/2 as much as the standard one. With it, the FS now has similar weight and dimension in comparison to the U50 (the lenght of the U50 is about 1" longer). The battery drains fairly quickly; it goes down to 5% after 1hr 20min of movie playback. I can now put it in my pant pocket ( I personally do not recommend it for it looks kind of silly). Overall, I love it b/c it meets my expectation: ESTHETICS and LIGHTER WEIGHT. I probably gonna sell the thick battery on ebay and buy another slimline one. That's just my opinion. If u want longer battery life (3-4hrs) then this is not for you.
