Hi all, looks like Fujitsu will released the FMV-U8240 (codename: Vaio UX and Flipstart Killer) next month (June 2007), in three flavours according to the PC World Hands on. This little baby sports a 5.6-inch LCD at the same resolution as the Vaio UX but addresses two UX issues - Screen size and Keyboard usability.
They however managed to bungle one area. My question is, how do you make a 580gm, 171mm x 133mm x 32mm thick, Vista capable Intel GMA 950 graphics capable UMPC with 1GB RAM and 40GB HDD, a usable touch-typable keyboard, a potential Vaio UX AND Flipstart Killer, and leave out the Bluetooth?

Update:
I've added a size comparison to the Flipstart 1.0, OQO Model 02 and Vaio UX.

Jimscraft,
Thanks for the information. I agree that the flipstart is pocketable in a pants pocket (done with my cardboard coutout, my actual Flipstart arrives Monday). Some seem to feel that neither the Flipstart nor Fujitsu is pocketable, I just disagree. To me the flipstart is completely pocketable in pants and the Fujitsu is not. And to me, being pocketable is a HUGE difference. Sometimes I want to slip in and out of work without announcing to the world by carrying a computer that I am coming or going. And I often do not wear a jacket, so I want it to fit in my pants. Sometimes, I just want to take my computer into the store and not leave it in the car. It was nice to hear your opinion about the weight. I suspect I will like the Flipstart as much as you, but I am just one of those guys that will go to some inconvenience to have a computer with me all the time. I can't wait to see the next generation of Flipstartand UMPC devices. Cut the thickness and weight down significantly, and I'll never be without one.

for me its a near-fit. I'd say, just outside the realm of "fits in pants pocket", enough to make me leery. I imagine the actual device will have rounded corners, and probably fit a little better; so there's a decent chance that the fujitsu might well fit in some of my pockets under some circumstances.
However... I've had experience with machines just on the border of usability, and what I've seen is that, if something is just barely marginally pocketable, it will be bulky enough that I'll be reluctant to actually carry it in the "real world", so it will end up spending more time sitting unused.
I'd love to have a usable fujitsu; everything about it seems much nicer than the rest of the field, but without seeing one in hand, and trying to carry it for a week, there's probably no good way to tell. If I can get an eBay'd machine for ~ $1000 usd, in about a year's time, that might be a decent investment. Hopefully, there will be a new generation of FlipStart by then, too...

Dynamism are now listing all the accessories suggesting this is getting pretty real and close
In comparison, they have no prices listed for the HTC Shift

Looks like Akihabaranews.com will be the first to review a shipped unit. Their unit just arrived and the review (which I'll bet my freshest apples will be a video review) is forthcoming.

Well, the price posted on Dynamism is almost $600 more than projected in the article. I was anticipating a UMPC that would finally be priced more in the range that I think will generate consumer interest. They CANNOT expect to gain more than a small niche in the market unless they price these gadgets more consistently with mid-to-lower-range notebooks.

I want one. The bluetooth thign is not an issue for me, as I'm use to using a CF Bluetooth Card. I love my lifebook, and I am pretty happy with Fujitsu as a company. I will be getting one of these, as long as their isn't some kind of bomb dropped from here until later.

dynamism frequently charges a huge premium for their 'service';
they are able to do so, because the products they tag on extra cost
are generally ones that you can't get from anyplace else, and they make
extra effort to treat their customers well.
If/when other people start carrying the new Fujitsu, I'd expect to see them
running for several hundred bucks (USD) cheaper, but don't expect Dynamism to discount.
On the other hand... if other resellers are slow to pick up the Fujitsu,
and you're desperate to get one, Dynamism will be more than happy to take your orders.
Some things (like FlipStart) they sell, that *are* broadly available seem to have little if any markup,
so YMMV.

I think I will throw my thoughts in on this as well. I don't see this as a flipstart killer as well. Size, speed, weight flipstart is ahead. The one thing the lifebook u has is the tablet feature. To some this is important. To me, this is not that important.
I will say right now that the Flipstart will be faster. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that. The new intel chip is clocked at 800mhz. It is running on a low power architecture (significantly lower that the Pentium M) and this will accentuate the slow clock cycle already. Now will this be faster than the OQO 02, very possible.
Faster than the Flipstart. Not a chance.
But this isn't really that big of an issue. The device will still do what it is supposed to do, just not as fast as others. And so it is.
I own a 1510 now, and I love it. But it just is not pocket portable. It is too big to not go unnoticed when carrying it around. The flipstart IMO has the most power for doing what I need in the handtop arena at the moment. The Sony UX is the champ when it comes to just numbers and power. The problem with it is, I need to type a lot and it' sjust not do able on the UX.
All this said, I'm still looking forward to hearing about this new lifebook series. Competition drives innovation.
It is good to see so many companys starting to take a stab at this market.
