Ladies and gentlemen, Sony (Japan) have just announced the world's first 64-bit UMPC in the refresh of the Vaio UX series according to Akihabaranews.

This baby sports the new Samsung 64GB SLC NAND type SSD, Intel's new ULV Core2 Solo Processor at 1.2GHz and Japanese Windows Vista. Other than that, the form factor is the same, the RAM is still 1GB and the price (I predict) is still out-of-reach for most consumers.

So, let's head on over to Dynamism meanwhile and await the arrival of the first shipment.

...As for whether current SSD based UX owners should look to upgrade and as for performance increase expectations? ...let's wait for the reviews!

Thanks for the news! Now they need to bring it out with a Core 2 Duo and a screen size upgrade to 5.6". That would be the perfect UMPC for me!

Is that 64bit processor or 64gigabit SSD storage? Headline says one, story the other

Any other sources to determine which it is?

It is both! link

Interesting article, but I will have to stick with my FS, for now.

I should have asked, how much faster than a P-M is a C2 Solo at the same speed?

I'm with GadgetFreak. I have live with a 5inch screen estate for 8months and grew out of it. 5.6-6 inch screen would be sweet and remove the side handles and it pretty much look like the OQO but on nitro.

So, help me out here. The Core Solo is actually a Core Duo with a non-functioning core, so doesn't that mean it's also a 64-bit processor? I know none of the Core Solo machines I've seen come with Vista-64, but I assume that has to do with compatibility issues with drivers. (Vista-64 will not accept unsigned drivers, including those for XP that work just fine on Vista-32.) Also, there's a dearth of software written to take advantage of 64-bit registers so it doesn't give much advantage at present.

In terms of speed, the C2 Solo is supposed to be about 15% faster than the equivalent Core Solo so the new UXes won't really be faster than the old UXes. They will get more battery life though.

Since I already own a UX-390N, I'm not really looking to upgrade at this point; maybe with the next refresh.

I'm _not_ looking for a larger screen. I want to be able to carry it with me pretty much everywhere. If it gets too much bigger, then I won't.
I'd like to see 2GB RAM, but I'm aware that every time you double RAM you also double the power needed to make it work, especially in Standby, thereby decreasing battery life.

I read the Core Solo is 32 bit, Core 2 Solo 32 + 64 bit.

Bigger screen without hand grips would make the unit no larger in overall size. Don't want it bigger, its already a big mother.

Internally the specs are great but externally it leaves a lot to be desired. Sony should redo the form factor so that it is longer, narrower and is built around a true touch type keyboard. What good is having full desktop OS and programs ifyou cannot touch type? If they just copied the Psion Revo or HP Jornada form factor it would be a great computer!
