Word is out that Sony's UX50 UMPC is getting Flash memory and an optional TV tuner.

16GB of Flash memory instead of a 20/30 GB Hard Drive is a great thing for starting and running applications, but it might be a small footprint for having much else. 16GB most likely turns out to be a little less given the 1024/1000 issue, XP will take a GB or two, all of your applications will eat up some more, leaving with you 10GB or less which will surely run out quickly. Admittedly, it's not a desktop PC, so it could function very well depending on your usage.

The little TV tuner is a great idea as well, although I'm sure it'll eat up your batteries quickly, or keep you tethered to an AC adaptor. Either way, it's a great accessory for those who're so inclined.

Personally, I think this the FLash mem is a step in the right direction, and how they got all this in an $1800 package is beyond me.

XP uses more than a GB or two. It can use anywhere from 4-8 gigs, depending on whether or not your have all the updates. Still it is awesome to see Sony doing this.

I would go with the 16 gig myself.

Agreed, I would go this route as well.

Um. Its not going to be the same price (how the hell is 16 GIGAbytes of flash the same price as any 1.8" hard drive?). A Japanese site had an estimated price of $2700 for the flash option.

The site I got the info from said $1800 USD. I don't doubt if that's too good to be true tho.

I think the $1800 price point uses the Celeron M processor plus XP Home based on build-to-order (i could be wrong). I would have thought it would cost more than that

If the regular version costs $1800 then you can be be damn sure the flash version will be at least 600-700 dollars more. There was a similar estimated price increase for the samsung Q1.

Does the UX90S still come with a CF slot? What about the UX90PS?

I'm not exactly sure what the difference is between the 90S and 90SP (maybe the WinXP Pro option?). At any rate, both come with a CF slot. I've got an 8GB CF card that will take semi-permanent residence there. As others have said, I suspect that the 16GB model will be more expensive, just judging by the $/GB rates for each.
That’s good to know, CF lot is an import feature to the UX that I need. I wonder how many version of the UX Sony can realistically bring out that people will be willing to buy. Too many versions could lead to the discontinuing of some of the models...

dur, that should be important feature, not import...

not even close

XP SP2 uses 1.75GB

the rest of the bulk comes from paging file, hibernation file, system restore. but that is completely upto the end user.

What about VISTA, if one was so inclined to load the Beta 2 that is available?

Does the Sony UX series have a warranty sticker like the OQO? Just wondering about upgrading the U.S. version without sacraficing that warranty.

I like the caseing, black is nice.As far as I know no warrenty stickers have been found in the UX. Lets not remind them.I wonder what the make and model of the actual solid state drive is.I hope its a Samsung, word is they are really fast.

the 16GB is a Samsung, I opened one up, photos here: link
