I was up until about 3 am playing with my UX. Here are my initial thoughts:
It is bigger than I expected. It is like someone took an OQO and wrapped an accessory around it (i.e. zoom buttons, track stick, etc).
It is very well made. It feels good in your hand and it is very easy to use.
The screen is very difficult to see and I have good eyesight. It is very bright and movies look just as good as they do on my FJ290.
The keyboard is fine. I have no problem typing on it for short e-mails.
The docking cradle is amazing. The best item to include with any micro pc.
The stylus is very small and I will be losing it very soon I would imagine.
The sound quality is amazing using itunes and the equalizer BUT they put the headphone jack on the bottom of the unit. This is not bad if you have a L connection on your earphones but I used quality headphones that do not have this. Even with the stand (which DOES NOT come with the unit) I will not be able to use those phones.
An extra docking station is definately needed to keep by my bed.
Fan is not as loud as the OQO.
Wifi so far appears just as strong as my FJ290 laptop. No problems anywhere in my large, mansion (ha ha).
The case it comes with is good but we need a nice form fitting but protective leather case.
Overall, this is an amazing little device. I am amazed at SONY. If you really NEED pocketablility then I recommend the OQO but if you are willing to scarafice a little size for a 1) Better screem 2)more power 3) better user interface then get this unit.
PROS: Well made, bright screen, docking station, dual cameras, lighted keyboard, stronger power, possible desktop replacement.
CONS: difficult to read text, small stylus, bigger than the OQO
My e-mail is kaliban185 AT NOSPAM aol.com if you have any questions or want to talk about the UX180.
Thank you to all of you how gave advice, waiting with me, and were very patient with my obession. Best to all you.

I removed it. I was trying to say I will not be posting as much now that my unit arrived. It was stupid. Sorry.

So where do most of us stand on the screen resolution ? Difficult to read text. Getting this kind of device to the mainstream would be really hindered with this problem. Most of us are use to reading from small high res screens but the main stream.. hence QVGA.
I've always thought 1024x800 on a 4.5" screen is too fine pixel per square inch. I guess VISTA might have a setting that will allow for all text / icons to be scaled based on screen size and resolution but other then for viewing pictures and slightly better font reading quality high res on a small screen is a bit of a waste.
1024x800 on 5.5" (able to fit on the existing size handtops) is the right spec.

Nice review!
Will someone tell me if the UX will also do 800x480?
I don't have the UX, but I'm familiar with that sort of resolution, i.e. 204 ppi for a T221 and U105. As I have said a few times...people are use to what Apple claims is optimal...100 ppi. The OQO is 186 ppi. The issue isn't a hardware issue, i.e. too high of pixels per square inch...it is a Microsoft text scaling problem. Hoping Vista will fix the lack of scaling capabilities, because if they don't then manufacturers will maintain the low ppi standard which means less screen real estate. So I am for the 4.5" 1024x600, because if 100 ppi is continued to be sold as optimal then we will need a device the size of the U105 for 800x480...the higher resolution the better as you can get the device smaller, it'd be great to see a smaller 4.5" OQO. Design the driver to handle 800x480 until scaling improves.
The reason I ask if it does 800x480 is for a solution for those who find 1024x600 too much. However, kyone with the UX being so much bigger, they could have put a 5.5 inch screen on it...it would make more sense to put a bigger screen on a bigger device than a smaller screen on a bigger device. Doesn't Antelope or someone have a 6" XGA screen..my U105 is a 7" WXGA screen. A 5.5" 1280x768/800 would be more ideal...I think flipstart was something like 5.6" 1024x600...or maybe that was someone else.
The one issue that occassional bothers me with the OQO is some applications and web pages don't work with 800x480 and most webpages are designed for XGA.

kaliban,
I am curious about using the UX180 as a GSM voice handset. Do you think that it could work with a utility such as 'phone tools' to allow GSM voice access? If so, can it work with a bluetooth headset? Let me know what works.
Thanx,

diJenerate...how are you going to hook up GSM to the UX...I don't think it has GSM capabilities...were you thinking of getting that device I got for my OQO, if so then bluetooth headsets don't work and I never got around to seeing if my headon or was it headson headset works with the chip.
kaliban, would you mind commenting about battery life. To be accurate, you'd probably need to go through many cycles with the battery to get an accurate time.

dude, what are you talking about... if it's got E.D.G.E. it's got GSM. E.D.G.E., is a data layer on top of the GSM standard just as GPRS and HSPDA are.

so far Sony doesn't sell the stand separately. You have to buy a UX90 to get it. Sony US claims there are no plans to offer it.

If SONY is only selling 750 in the US, they probably aren't going to lavish the UX180 with many accessories. Too bad - I was hoping that oqo would be pushed to reintroduce their docking cradle...
What are the BT profiles supported, or is it straight SP2?

Although its true that the UX180 has EDGE, but only data capabilities (i.e., no voice capabilities). So, you cannot use it as a phone. You can use the UX50/90 as a phone via a GSM-GPRS CF card. I am not sure how viable that would be.

With EDGE you should be able to use Skype for phone calls which would make this machine a free cell phone.

you say that the screen is difficult to see...
can you set the screen to 800x600 (or the nearest mode to this)? and if so, does that make text readable?
I was thinking of getting one for my work, but I'd need to read and write text... I can write text using a USB keyboard, but am worried the size of the text could kill my eyes :o/
hmm.. do you get more than the usual glare and/or reflections from the screen? maybe you could elaborate on why you find it difficult to see the screen?
