After reading a number of reviews of the new Sony UX handtop by folks that just didn't seem to "get" handtops, I set about to write one from the perspective of someone who does. While the review is the centerpiece, there is a major section that compares the UX to the OQO 01+. There is also a short piece on handtops vs PDAs.

I'd welcome any suggestions, comments, criticisms, and will tolerate verbal abuse to a point

AnthonyB: I take every bit of feedback seriously. I may not happen to agree, but I still take it seriously (and it means I'll try even harder to keep my personal bias either out of my writing or at least clearly labeled). I've had to change my mind on more than one thing over the years (even on PDAs vs Handtops !!). I'd rather stake my reputation on being willing to consider, rather than being always right. (The first has the virtue of being possible )

Thanks for the kind words about the writing. I'm looking forward to future conversations, especially when the 02 comes out.

Your review is excellent! (better than excellent --- the best!) --- on the same level and better, than the most largest tec magazine or sites --- you should be the one writing for them.

Meansquare.

Great review of the Sony. It really piqued my interest in the device having seen the docking station at work.
Well done.

Steve.

Awesome display of writing skills Meansquare.

I retract my point from earlier regarding you toning down your lanquage regarding the size difference between the OQO and UX.

I had not noticed the picture labeled "OQO and UX from the side" at this link link that you created.

Anyone that would show this picture, which clearly demonstrates the monster sized UX size difference over the OQO, can tone down their lanquage any way thay they want.

Writing reviews is always a matter of walking a fine line. You want to provide as much information as possible. You also want to provide some interpretation of the raw data while introducing as little bias as possible. When dealing with an issue as subjective as size, I lean entirely toward providing as much raw data, from as many angles as possible, and then letting people draw their own conclusions.

In the case of the side view, I used the OQO with the standard battery, even though I never use it in that configuration for reasons of battery use time. I did that for two reasons: First, many people apparently do use the OQO in that configuration and those that don't know that the extended battery is twice the depth of the standard. Second, there isn't any way to know what the 02 will look like, but, in the absence of information to the contrary, the best guess is something roughly the same size and shape as the 01, with essentially the same battery dimensions. With a modern processor, a standard battery will deliver the same kind of improved life as experienced with the UX, which means more folks will go with the standard battery. There aren't any guarantees, but it provides as accurate a guess at the 02 vs UX profiles as I can give at the time.

I recently added a tips and tricks page, which is obviously still in its formative stages. I also corrected the battery section to use WH (Watt-Hours) instead of mAH, which was misleading.

Thank you so much!

Great review - I'm expecting my UX tomorrow and your thoughts prepped me nicely.

Meansquare,
on your review you do a 3d test on the oqo 01+, could you:
1. go to run and type in DXDIAG

2. the new window that pops up, in the right lower corner of the window will be a loading box, wait till it is fully loaded before you go any further.

3. After loading is complete, there will be tabs at the top of the page, click on display.

4. Down on the right hand corner you will see "DirectX Features"
Make sure that "direct draw acceleration:" is enabled, same goes for direct 3D acceleration should enable as well. Under that is will say AGP texture is not available, don't worry, this is normal. Just make sure those two things listed ARE enabled. If not then enable them.

(you could also enter this dialog box in the future to runt tests on your 3D drivers.)

5. Exit the window, right click on your wallpaper and enter settings, change the color quality from 24 bit down to 16 bit, save the changes and your 3D screen savers will work, this also goes for most 3D game you will wanna play on the unit, it will need to be on 16bit.

and post the new results please? thank you.

I greatly appreciated the comparisons, as they certainly make it clear to me which one I'd find more useful. Have you done any comparison of the OQO 02 yet? I'd be curious to see if they've improved on any of the areas where they previously fell behind the UX.
