And it's kicking EVDO's ass...

I just switched from using EVDO (hacked Motorola E815 phone with Verizon Wireless - link ) to using HSDPA (LG CU 500 phone with Cingular - link ) and it's fantastic, especially with my OQO

With HSDPA I'm reliably getting 500+ kbps down and 150+ kbps speeds via Bluetooth or USB (in San Francisco) - vs. about 400 kbps down and 75 kbps up with EVDO. Some people are even reporting 700+ kbps speeds - link

UPDATE: I replaced my LG CU 500 with a Samsung i607 (BlackJack) Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone and HSDPA performance is even better now.

Is any special hacking of the phone required, or does it support bluetooth DUN out of the box?

No hacking required

Its only available in LIMITED markets..

Sure, HSDPA is not very widespread yet, but neither is EVDO, really... Give it time!

EVDO not widespread??? Comon tnkgrl you have to be kidding me! HSPDA in NY is in about a 20 block radius!

Oh well, HSDPA covers all of vegas, north vegas and henderson, that's most of sothern Nevada. @7k square miles. Nothing in northern Nevada. I suppose that means EDGE when I'm in Reno. Verizon covers the EXACT SAME area in my state with EDVO [viz., no Reno/Tahoe].

Assuming that "20 blocks" is not sarcasm, I guess you're just a victim of your locale. Viva La$ Vega$!

Well, according to this, I guess the '20 blocks' was sarcasm. link

Looks like it'll be much more extensive by 09/06.

Misinformation from the mobility guru? Tsk. Tsk.

HSDPA and EVDO coverage are pretty similar in the Bay Area - EVDO is available in parts of the central valley where HSDPA is not, however... Oh well, viva San Francisco!
No its not misinformation. Do you see the DARK BLUE areas? Comon this isnt anywhere near EVDO..

*mobility2day* it's really simple: I live in San Francisco, I have HSDPA coverage, I'm happy- that's all In most other places I have EDGE coverage, which is faster than 1xRTT... So yes EVDO coverage is better (but far from widespread), and yes I don't care! No more US (and Korea) centric CDMA for me (not to mention, no more Verizon) - it's GSM all the way, baby (I'm also a T-Mobile customer).

PS: My little finger tells me that if you are "moving" to Gerlach NV where there is no mobile phone coverage (I can confirm this from my yearly pilgrimage to Burning Man), and if you are nice to the customer service lady, Verizon will magically waive your early termination fee. Fascinating, eh?

Viva la west!

I simply have to say, again, that as a person who puts himself out as one to be listened to about tech in general, I think you owe it to those who listen to you to do your best work all the time. You and others like yourself (I'm specifically thinking of JK) should hold yourselves to a higher standard of accuracy and fairness to the products/services that you review (I certainly do). I mean you no offense, but I don't see that standard being met in many ways. I am duly unimpressed.

When you and JK speak, people listen because you present with an air of authority and a fancy website, so when you say, "HSDPA is only available in a 20 block radius" or he says "OQO sucks because the stand is stupid;" PEOPLE LISTEN. You have, in my opinion, an obligation to get it right. Every time, all the time. Power, responsibility blah, blah, blah....

Unsolicited lecture subroutine terminated. BTW, its one man's opinion, feel free to ignore it.

As to this query: "Do you see the DARK BLUE areas?"

Don't you think this prior statement makes it clear that I did? "Looks like it'll be much more extensive by 09/06."

Let's just say that YES, I saw the dark blue areas which were surrounded by the light blue coverage area anticipated to be online in about two months. Further, in my estimation of scale, small though they are, they appear to consist of an area well in excess of '20 blocks.' I am neither; however, a New Yorker nor professional tech guru and am therfore subject to error.

Hi folks: Is HSDPA exclusive to Cingular, or does T-Mobile have it now?

HSDPA (and its underlying 3G technology WCDMA/UMTS) is currently only available from CIngular... WCMDA normally uses the 2100 MHz band (in most of the world) but in the US it uses the 850/1900 MHz bands, requiring special phones. Similarly, GSM/GPRS/EDGE uses the 900/1800 MHz bands in most of the world and the 850/1900 bands in the US (and Canada). That being said, the FCC is having a spectrum auction soon which includes the 2100 MHz band and there is speculation that T-Mobile will be bidding on it in order to deploy WCDMA/UMTS/HSDPA over the standard 2100 MHz band...

For voice I use an unlocked Nokia N80 which is a 3G smart phone with quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900) and WCDMA/UMTS (2100 only). I currently can only use this phone for UMTS when I'm travelling in Europe or Asia. I'm a T-Mobile (US) customer, so hopefully I'll be able to use this phone for UMTS in the US very soon. Then again UMTS, while faster than EDGE is not as fast as HSPDA, but if T-Mobile is going to deploy WCDMA/UMTS/HSDPA on the standard 2100 MHz band, there's going to be a lot more nice unlocked phones to choose from - so stay tuned!

In the meantime I use the LG CU500 locked to Cingular for data - it's a decent phone with quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900) and tri-band WCDMA/UMTS/HSDPA (850/1900/2100) that I'll eventually unlock in so I can use it while travelling as well. But I'm looking forward to upgrading my Nokia to a 3G smart phone with HSDPA that I can use witn T-Moible (US)

As far as the question about coverage and price both can be answered on the website. If your considering geting a HSDPA phone and using data services it would behoove you to get the unlimited data plan. Fees will add up pretty quick otherwise.
