And it's kicking EVDO's ass...

I just switched from using EVDO (hacked Motorola E815 phone with Verizon Wireless - link ) to using HSDPA (LG CU 500 phone with Cingular - link ) and it's fantastic, especially with my OQO

With HSDPA I'm reliably getting 500+ kbps down and 150+ kbps speeds via Bluetooth or USB (in San Francisco) - vs. about 400 kbps down and 75 kbps up with EVDO. Some people are even reporting 700+ kbps speeds - link

UPDATE: I replaced my LG CU 500 with a Samsung i607 (BlackJack) Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone and HSDPA performance is even better now.

All you need for unlimited data with the LG CU500 on Cingular is a voice plan + their $20/month "Media Max 200" plan (unlimited data + 200 text messages)... You're not supposed to "tether" using this plan (you're only supposed to use the built-in web, streaming audio/video and IM clients), but it works fine! Your mileage may vary

Yes, with HDSPA you can use both voice and data simultaneously, contrary to EVDO (assuming you're in a 3G area, of course)... Works fine with my LG CU500!

How simple is it to tether your phone to a laptop?

Can you point to specific instructions somewhere?

Thanks...

*urkle*, just take a look on Howard Forums for instructions. You can "tether" via Bluetooth or USB, but Bluetooth is easier.

Here's a general outline of the steps:
1) Make sure your plan supports data
2) Make sure your phone supports Bluetooth DUN (Dial Up Networking) OR make sure your computer supports your phone's USB cable (download proper drivers)
3) Pair your phone and your computer via Bluetooth OR connect your phone to your computer via USB
4) Create a new dial up connection
5) The login ID and password depend on your phone company
- Cingular: WAP @ CINGULARGPRS.COM and CINGULAR1
- T-Mobile (US): blank for both
- Verizon/Sprint: can't remember
6) The phone number is typically *99***1# for GSM phones and #777 for CDMA phones
7) Connect to the Internet using the new dial up connection...
8) Enjoy!

Once setup you only have to repeat steps 7 and 8 each time you want to connect to the Internet.

tnkgrl,

I got my phones but I don't seem to have a dun profile showing up? What do I do?

*mensrea* et al, you need to read Howard Forums - I even linked the thread for you in my original post. Not only that, but if you're not going to RTFM, at least play with your phone for a while and navigate all the freakin' menus

There's a setting on the LG CU500 under "Connection" to select between USB and Bluetooth DUN - it's set to USB by default. Change it to Bluetooth, re-pair, and off you go...

I'm not doing tech support unless you bribe me, dammit!

But your so good!!!!

Hehe Bribe me.
*soda97*, as I've mentioned earlier in the thread, HSDPA is only available from Cingular - I currently use Cingular for data and T-Mobile (US) for voice! EDGE is available from T-Mobile (US), though...

BTW, I actually RTFM before I got the phone. . I joined HF when you posted about the HTC discussions there. I find that site to be a bit busy and overwhelming though. Anyhow I've searched there and found no clear instructions on HSDPA tethering, just a bunch of disjointed posts. One link dosen't work.

Anywho, while I have had no problem with my 2125, I'm getting nowhere with this LG! I've used various phone #/username/password combos (including following your explicit instructions) and nothing seems to be working. I get an "Error 619." Most of the time.

Any thoughts? What type of bribe are you looking for?

*mensrea*, some questions:
1) Do you have a working data plan (can you surf the web with the LG CU500)
2) Do you have 3G in your area?
3) Do you have a 3G SIM card (if not, you should get Cingular to ugrade you)
4) What OS are you using?
5) What Bluetooth stack are you using?

If you have Media Net or Media Max you should use the settings I described for CIngular above.

Bribe me - link

1) Do you have a working data plan (can you surf the web with the LG CU500)- Yes.
2) Do you have 3G in your area?- Yes, remember my discussion with DC. Aslo, the phone displays 3g.
3) Do you have a 3G SIM card (if not, you should get Cingular to ugrade you)- Yes.
4) What OS are you using?- XP Home.
5) What Bluetooth stack are you using? Standard Wincom on 01+. I remember back when you and others were changing over, but remember I've been using this without issue on my edge phone.

Lastly, I have the unlimited data plan (PC Connnect) not a media plan. So, on the old phone (EDGE) my user and password were both blank, phone number *99#. These settings still work when I try to connect by putting my sim back in my 2125.

As I mentioned I've tried various user/password/phone number combos non of which work for my LG. It seems to me that based on my plan/configuration that this should work:

User: ISP @ CINGULARGRPS.COM
pw: CINGULAR1
#: *99***1# or *99#

But, alas, this does not work.

For my 3G connection I use the supplied LG software "LG Internet Kit" Its basically a DUN interface. Once I have established a BlueTooth connection to my computer and set it up as a modem I then run the LG software. I select 3G and not GPRS. Put in a profile called h3g, and a APN: 3NetAcc... and call number:*99#. no user name and password. I was never able to work out if you could simply use a Windows DUN as 3G expects an APN address. Finally at the bottom I select my BT 3G modem they I have installed. I then make sure that I have selected BT and not USB on the mobile phone settings, this is found under connectivity/ Dial up network, on the mobile.

Then I surf away.

*mensrea*, have you successfully paired the LG CU500 *after* setting it to use Bluetooth for DUN instead of the default USB DUN? Have you changed your dial up connection in Windows XP to point at the right modem/serial port? Have you gone to the Cingular website and checked your data settings (try changing the settings in the instructions in this link to match the settings for your PC Connect plan)? I'm on the Media Max plan and my settings are WAP @ CINGULARGPRS.COM, CINGULAR1 and *99***1# (APN is wap.cingular). I don't know of anyone using the LG CU500 on a PC Connect plan so I'm not sure what's going on here. Since you're officially allowed to tether, why don't you call Cingular for support?

*soda97*, you probably need a voice plan - I use the cheapest voice plan (Nation 450) which is $40/month.

"*mensrea*, have you successfully paired the LG CU500 *after* setting it to use Bluetooth for DUN instead of the default USB DUN?" Yes.

"Have you changed your dial up connection in Windows XP to point at the right modem/serial port?" Yes. And yes, its plugged in!

"Have you gone to the Cingular website and checked your data settings (try changing the settings in the instructions in this link to match the settings for your PC Connect plan)?" No, I'll do that.

"Since you're officially allowed to tether, why don't you call Cingular for support?" I will. But now I'll have to spend an hour + on the phone waiting for some dufus tech support guy who doesn't even understand the question much less the answer. He/she will flip through the manual and put me on hold multiple times until he/she finds the one sentient being on staff who can help me.

Thanks for your help though. When I get the answer I'll post it.
