And it's kicking EVDO's ass...
I just switched from using EVDO (hacked Motorola E815 phone with Verizon Wireless - link ) to using HSDPA (LG CU 500 phone with Cingular - link ) and it's fantastic, especially with my OQO
With HSDPA I'm reliably getting 500+ kbps down and 150+ kbps speeds via Bluetooth or USB (in San Francisco) - vs. about 400 kbps down and 75 kbps up with EVDO. Some people are even reporting 700+ kbps speeds - link
UPDATE: I replaced my LG CU 500 with a Samsung i607 (BlackJack) Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone and HSDPA performance is even better now.

I managed to get a 3G PC card for free when i signed up for the data service to a laptop. I then bought the mobile out right for a few hundred dollars with no plan and took the USIM card out of the Data card and put it in the phone. Now I have data through my phone with no Voice plan. I can still make phone calls but at 1c/sec. I use the setup for 90% data and SMS are half normal price.

*mensrea* wait, I'm confused... You said the phone is plugged in? Are you using a USB cable or are you using Bluetooth to tether? If you are using the USB cable, you have to set the phone to USB BUN and also set the phone to USB data (instead of the USB mass storage default mode)! Note that USB data mode requires Windows XP drivers - link
Now, bribe me

I was kidding... as in those are the stupid questions you ask clueless end users. Is it plugged in?..., did you turn it on? Etc. When you asked if I had "re-paired the phone after..." it was in the same ballpark, so I was making a little joke. But I see why it was confusing.
I'm not clueless, just missing some key info. BTW: I've now been on hold @ 20mins... no sentient being yet.
I'm working on your bribe.

*mensrea*, sometimes you have to ask the stupid questions - I was not implying that you are clueless... Keep us posted!

Yes. I literally just got off the phone! So my estimate was a little short. It ended up being about an hour and a half.
Anyhow, I finally did get a sentient being on the phone and she was awesome! While we waited for programs to download and such, we talked about OQO, Sony, new phones that are coming out, and how it sometimes takes her 20 minutes to get some customers just to figure out how to get to the right pulldown menu.
Ultimately, she was unable to help me fix the problem with the dial-up connection manager. We tried everything including creating a new network profile with the following settings:
Connection title: 3g
Bearer: GPRS
Authentication: PAP
Username: ISP @ CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
APN: isp.cingular
I still got the same 619 disconnect error though. She told me that the only information she had about how to correct a "619 Error" was to reinstall the communication manager software. Since I didn't have the communication manager software installed in the first place this was the only fix she could come up with.
BTW, kyone, my LG didn't come with any software. I still would have probably tried to use a standard dial-up Bluetooth connection first anyhow. I do not like the idea of having additional software on my OQO. I try to keep it clean as possible.
So there's the solution tnkgrl. The connection manager software works. My tech-support lady/girl really had no extra insight on what could be wrong other than the phone being new. But it seems that the software is able to provision properly, doing it manually shouldn't be so hard. You're smarter than I am, maybe you could tell from the settings above what's wrong.
Anyway, the problem now is that I am not getting the kind is speed I'd like to see, my first test at speakeasy was 222 down and 170 up. It should be noted that's with only two bars on 3g, which is about all I get at my house right now. In fact I'm constantly falling into edge territory which causes the data connection to drop.
As far as the phones, she mentioned that the cingular would soon be introducing something called an 8550 and a 3225 both of which are HDSPA capable smart phones. Also, she said personally that she was waiting for the treo 750 which will be their windows mobile treo.
All of these phones were listed on our system as future products but she had no release dates. She did add however, that I shouldn't have to wait too long. I already pre-ordered my HTC meteor here. link

Ooops, looks like I was typing my long response while you were posting your question. See my treatise above.
Second speed test, BTW, 269 down; 113 up. ??? What gives?

i assume you mean don't like the idea.... I'm the same, I try to avoid any additional software. I had all the issues you were going through because i was one of the first in Aus to try and connect a data plan via a mobile phone as opposed to a data card. The software was one link in the chain to get it going. If you ever manage to get from where you are now to just using a standard dial-up connection let me know and i will try it also. I am not too keen on the LG software.... too many mouse clicks to just get a connection....

*mensrea*, try doing a speed test in a 3G area with 4 bars and report your speed.

Soda,
Im in australia and I pay $29 for 200M. With a company called Three. $29 here is about $22 in US. I dont have a voice plan, I just make calls on my data plan at 60c/min in Aust. But I use my mobile 95% of the time for data only.
