And it's kicking EVDO's ass...

I just switched from using EVDO (hacked Motorola E815 phone with Verizon Wireless - link ) to using HSDPA (LG CU 500 phone with Cingular - link ) and it's fantastic, especially with my OQO

With HSDPA I'm reliably getting 500+ kbps down and 150+ kbps speeds via Bluetooth or USB (in San Francisco) - vs. about 400 kbps down and 75 kbps up with EVDO. Some people are even reporting 700+ kbps speeds - link

UPDATE: I replaced my LG CU 500 with a Samsung i607 (BlackJack) Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone and HSDPA performance is even better now.

No, tnkgrl, its a WM5 candybar smartphone. The 'titan' is a PPC phone w/slide out keyboard. Both are 3g though. Here's where I bought mine:

link

The qtek 8500 is aka the HTC 'Star Trek' and will be comming to cingular very soon as the 'Cingular 3125' it is a WM5 flip phone, a'la the Motorola MPX 220, but it will only have edge from what I understand.

Cool, thanks! Too bad it's Windows Mobile...

*soda*, the HTC TyTN features a touch screen (but it's Windows Mobile)...

*mesrea*, is the Meteor HSDPA capable? The specs only mention 3-band UMTS!

I guess I'll know tommorow.

No joy! The phone will not connect to 3g, hell, it won't even connect to edge. Hours on the phone w/cingular. About an hour at the cingular store! Waiting now for importer's tech support to call back. I'll keep you posted.

*soda97*, you can only connect one computer to the phone at a time (for HSDPA access) - you could setup one computer to connect to the phone and act as a WiFi router for another computer, though.

Bleeding edge strikes again. Apparently I was the first US coustomer to recive this phone, at least from On The Go Solutions. Therefore as the "early adopter" I am the case study in which we learn that the HTC Mteor is not a US capable 3g phone! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

No edge no UMTS it is only a tri-band GSM phone in the US. On the Go Solutions has now changed their website. c'est la vie.

Doh! I'm sorry to hear that, but I thought so... Now go buy a TyTN
As you wish. I should have my TyTN early next week. The specs had better be right!

*mensrea*, people on Howard Forums have been using the TyTN with Cingular HSDPA, so I think the specs are correct.

*soda97*, EDGE is around 100-200 kbps down for me in general, but coverage in the Bay Area is pretty good... Cingular EDGE appears to be a bit faster than T-Mobile EDGE for me as well!

*mensrea*, wow, the Meteor is not even HSDPA, just UMTS - link

Yes, I knew that much. I was willing to tolerate UMTS speeds, but that damned thing wouldn't even get Edge in the US! Pity, its a really nice phone IMO.

My Tytn is in and it is AWESOME!!!!

i'm not above bribery! i'm having the same problem trying to connect the CU500 via bluetooth to cingular's netowrk...i've tried all the stuff in the blog, and three different connetions: cingular's communication manager, kensington bluetooth dongle dial up software, and the manual dial up connection wap@ cingular etc. etc. mensrea, how did you end up solving your problem?
thanks.....
