Ok Handtopers you can all cool your jets now because it’s straight from the horse’s mouth (Jory Bell) NO NEW OQO 02 to announce in this interview. Infact it sounds like Jory (OQO) is more interested in winning over corporate Blackberry users than trying to compete with the new Sony UX series and the consumer market to my ear.

He also mentioned about the full wireless convergence devise (computer) being on the “horizon” but really didn’t share any insight as to what his company is doing about it.

All in all it’s not a very rewarding interview if you are a consumer (like most of us here on Handtops) who’s looking at waiting for a Model 02 to emerge IMO

No new OQO 02 to announce is OQOs typical response to that question. No announcement as yet. I'm sure one is on the way. If they only release one every few years then they would want to get the 02 right. Im sure they will at least wait till VISTA is released.

I for one hope they don't wait for Vista as Vista doesn't have a fixed release date. I'd prefer something like Sony did with the UX... XP now, but Vista capable.

I think its funny how he dismissed the multimedia capabilities. My 01+ stunk for trying to play ripped DVDs, etc... the CPU always pegged, even when using VLC instead of WM, etc. Yet my Sony plays MP3s and ripped DVDs w/o issue (and with Outlook, Firefox, and Thunderbird all running in the background).

This didn't realy seem much like an interview. More of a why don't you tell us what OQO is all about. The things that saddens me is that it sounds like oqo is afriad to compete with Sony. Focusing on beating the Blackberry is so lame in my opinion. I want the UX power in an OQO. Don't tell me about how I can use an OQO over a cell phone. I didn't buy an OQO to compete with a blackberry, I bought it for computing. That's it.

Get yourselfs focused OQO. UMPC Pro. Why even associate with that garbage? By saying that your an UMPC Pro your saying that you have a subset too, just like the UMPC's, but you make your subset a little better by being a PRO. There is nothing special about that. Step up and be a computer. Not a UMPC.

/Rant off

I dont think that OQO is competing with Blackberry-type products in the sence of trying to replace the design and format of a palmtop, but rather convince clients in the market for palmtops that OQO is a more logical, practical and efficient choice.

As it stand with the 01+, it rates as a low end computer, and for many people I think it is more logical to have a mobile/handtop AND a laptop/desktop.

I think the competition to palmtops will be shown as putting more of an effort into making the OQO as independent as possible, where a user would be willing choose only and OQO because it will replace both the laptop and palmtop.

OQO has already tackled the problem of pocketability, replacing that aspect of what a palmtop is for, now it need to get onto capability. Maybe thats where we will see EVDO (or something similar). And while they are at it, they will probably also try to be a reasonably powerful competitor to the common laptop (putting the specs up).

And lets face it, the OQO's specs arent going to degrade from what the 01+ was, and if they are going to up grade (in an 02), they might as well do it right, push the button and pump it up as high as it goes.

Know what I mean?
Nice one.
Thanks.

But we must ask ourselves, exactly what is a Blackberry? Historically, its primarily a tool to check email over the cellular data networks and secondarily a phone. More recently, its sort of 50/50 for both. But the fact is, its a cellphone/sub-PDA that can send/receive email. If OQO is going to compete in this space, they're also competing with Treo's and other WM devices. Ironically, though, the OQO has actually been advertised as co-dependent with these devices... using them to tether over BT or USB for internet access. OQO has suggested carrying an OQO and a cellphone, and in that sense, replacing your laptop with an OQO. So, since we asked what a Blackberry is, exactly what's an OQO? Its XP in your pocket. Put another way, its un ultra-portable laptop replacement. How do you compete with a Blackberry when your device is not also a phone? Nor when it lacks the capabilities of a 24x7 internet connection for retrieving email? You don't. The odds are extremely good that OQO will include some sort of WWAN connectivity in the 02 (most likely EVDO from Verizon), which will address the issue of 24x7 internet capability, but it'll still lack a phone. Further, Jory mentioned using Skype... the OQO as it stands now with its horrible MS BT stack can only do the Skype thing with a wired headset (due to the CPU fan making too much noise for the local microphone/speaker to work properly and to the lack of BT profiles for BT headsets). In this regard (the lack of BT profiles for BT headsets), they are somewhat competitive with Blackberrys in that RIM only introduced BT to the Blackberry recently. But as OQO stands now, they can't compete with the Blackberry market due to the lack of 24x7 internet access. And when we see an 02 with integrated WWAN, but no native cellphone, they'll still only have addressed half the capability of a Blackberry or Treo (and lest we forget, remember that most unlimited cellular data plans [specifically those from Verizon] explicitly prohibit VOIP type communications). So even if they do integrate a WWAN solution, unless you have an 802.11b/g connection, good luck on the VOIP/Skype front. Sadly, I think OQO's marketing department is missing huge opportunities... namely, selling *ONLY* directly through their website and trying to compete in the Blackberry space. Until I got my UX180P, I had a Treo and an OQO. I don't use Blackberry's, but I definitely don't see the practicality in replacing my Treo (or a Blackberry) with an OQO.

I've given up waitinf for an OQO Model 02. It's pointless holding your breath. I've been only suffocating myself.

rl - get yourself and UX180P... you'll be happy. I've very much enjoyed my 01+, but the UX literally makes blows my OQO away in terms of speed... of course I'm in the position to buy an 02 as well if the specs are good, though I won't be in the first group this time around... I'll wait for the first round of reviews... comparing it to the 01+, the UX, and whatever else pops between now and then...

Well I think OQO has missed a big opportunity.. If they would have had a release for the OQO 01+ with EDGE/EVDO they would have taken the market by storm. Unfortunately now they have to play catch up ..
Now I posted this over on my site but really would like to get feedback from this crowd. Now please dont get on the "I hate OQO Bandwagon" that is not what I am doing,, I have used both models and truly it has it's pro's and cons which I talked about in my review last year..

or those who are interested in OQO, Fast Company had a sit down with Jory Bell of OQO. During this interview Jory speaks once again about why the OQO Model 01+ fits the enteprise. For me I think it is very interesting that Jory is calling the OQO Model 01+ a UMPC Pro? Last time I checked Microsoft has never defined this category. He also speaks about the new focus of the company going after Blackberry users. I think this is a fantastic idea but realistically it will never happen since the price of a current OQO is well over $1,700.00 dollars

I agree. Thus far, they seem to have missed a great opportunity. I fear they were surprised by the UX (not the UMPC market, just Sony's answer to it) and realized they were under-spec'd to compete and needed to retool to stay ahead. Of course, they're small and quiet which doesn't help them. I'm thinking that if they can keep the form factor, and give us either more RAM or faster RAM, a better CPU than the Transmeta (Via, perhaps), an SSD or NAND drive and integrated EVDO then they'll have a winner... if the combination doesn't hurt battery life. Of course, they'll need their EVDO partnership to remove the VOIP restrictions and perhaps make "unlimited" actually mean "unlimited".

Ditto! I just dont know how they can do it in a timely manner.

Yuck over the phone podcast. I want to gear the OQO's fan scream.

The thing is with the difference between Sony's new stuff and OQO is this: OQO is way older compared to the Sony, and things have gotten better now. The Crusoe used in OQO 01/01+ was the first power-efficient small blah blah processor (as far as I know), and had alot of problems. (In a sence, they are in the same boat as the OQO in terms of being the first UMPC). But if they didnt put it out there, then they wouldnt have made any money on it to put something else better out there, and other companies might not have started on the "M" versions of their chips if it werent for the Transmeta threat. Now that faster, smaller tech is out their (not only processors), I think OQO has the opportunity to blow competion away, which is worth holding your breath for.

I personally do not like Intel, I think mostly because it is a big company that gets alot more credit than it desrves. While their current chips are better than the Crusoe (created how many years ago?), and the Sony (Intel) is better than the OQO01+ (Crusoe), newer available chips (VIA Eden, AMD/Transmeta Efficeon) are way ahead in terms of speed, but the average joe doesnt always see that because intel is so in your face.

I think the best way to look at it is like this: When OQO01 came out, where was Sony/Intel? Nowhere. then their first things came out, werent as good. Eventually we come to today where Sony is a better device with Intel being a better processor, but OQO hasnt come out with anything quite yet, so we havent seen how much better it could be. (espcially if they dont take Intel, which they wont)

I think it is worth holding out for an OQO. OQO has to play catch up at some point because 1. they cannot just release products every 3 monthes, 2. they should see what competition has to offer before they try to out do it, or they will be playing ultra catchup.

In other words... rl... I think its worth waiting for an 02 at least until...end of September.

Out.

No new announcement concerning a new oqo; which is what we've been hearing for quite sometime. Hope you didn't blow your wad kaliban. A little premature...
