Just finished a Clean XP Install for the second time on my 60GB upgraded drive. Due to the fact that I didn't perform a low-level format after ripping the 60GB from an iPod video before installing it in my UX180P, I encountered the error: "Error loading operating system" after a few days of use. So - performed a low-level format utilizing Maxtor’s drive utility and then installed Windows XP Pro SP2 from external Sony DVDRW (DRX-820U). Performing an install via USB flash seems feasible, but I got sick of trying after a couple days with 2GB cruzr. Only good to come from the experience was my discovery of the program "FlashBoot" - which I'm sure will come in handy in similar situations of booting and troubleshooting CD'less Floppy'less computers.

So - what's the verdict on the increased fan usage with the 60GB? Mine seems to be on all the time, but I figured it's because I don't have all the Sony Software bells and whistles to adjust the thing, only XP with updates and Sony's hardware drivers from the site. But - if Supp0rtLinux is using the OEM OS configuration, then perhaps my assumption is incorrect? I considered timing the battery life for the device in various states before upgrading the HDD, but didn't. Anyone want to run some tests on a 30GB stock model to compare with our 60GB hotrods? These UX models have a lot of potential, though perhaps not for the average user. I've found that Windows "Remote Desktop" is the most useful networking tool ever. I access my UX from a desktop on the network and thus utilize a full sized monitor, keyboard and mouse. When I travel I'll have to squint a bit, but the majority of the time I think I'll be accessing it remotely...

I use Remote Desktop with my OQO. Because it uses the Local machine and not the OQO for video hardware at times the local computer can display images faster remotely then locally on the OQO. I find that some PDF files I read with graphics can scroll faster using Remote Desktop then on the OQO. You can also display higher resolutions then 1280x1024. I just wish it was able to support 1920x1200 for my 24" monitor. Remote Desktop was written years ago and as such they didn't account for such high resolutions !

Check out RAdmin...
Recent Blog: The Motorother Talktouch

If I understand it correctly RAdmin works completely differently to Windows Remote Desktop (WRD). RAdmin send the mouse and keyboard to the remote computer and you see a graphical update on your local screen, whereas WRD logs out the remote computer and then WRD logs into the remote computer and draws a virtual desktop of your remote screen, it doesn't send over a graphical bit copy.

Because it is a virtual desktop it is quicker because it does not have to send over constant screen updates as you navigate around the remote computer and it is able to have any resolution at the local computer even higher then the remote computer it is working from.

All the resolutions offered in WRD are 4:3 ratio not the newer 16:9. Maybe Vista will update this.

First, Dynamism.com sells the 60gig upgrade. I bought 1 and it is trouble free and the fan does not run constantly.
Second, check out the free servied at logmein.com, which simplifies remote access and will compensate automatically for different screen resolutions. This works well with the ux, and will work with any computer that is on the internet.
The UX worked great for routine items that required minimal data input. Alas, I found myself taking along a screen and keyboard on weekend trips so that I could write a weekly newsletter. Not saving much space, really. I decided to move to a Pansonic R5 -- again a Japanese model--also available from Dynamism. These guys gave me 90% credit toward the exchange, even though I'd had the UX for nearly a month. I can't say enough good things about this company. They handle all the conversion to English--keyboards, operating systems and will provide up to a 3 year "rescue warrantee" on Japan-only models. (I have no interest in this company, but rarely find such customer-first attitudes. Check out their "specials" for a returned 60gig unit that should be available shortly)

UPDATE: Received another "Error loading operating system" - even after performing low-level format on 60GB iPod drive. So... not sure what to think of this scenario, but troubleshooting from USB is quite a pain at times. Thinking I'll go back to my Vaio TX series... Anyone looking for a 60GB UX180P?
