OK, I'm going to give the site's blogging feature a try... This first entry is the list of first impressions that I posted yesterday after spending the previous evening setting the OQO up and starting to explore its features and capabilities:
- It gets a bit warm, but not so much that its unpleasant. i.e. It doesn't get any warmer than any other laptop that I've used and, like tnkgrl said (in the OQO forum), it keeps your hands nice and warm (Potentially a nice feature now that its starting to get colder in some parts of the country... :-) Even in summer though, I don't see it being uncomfortable to hold).
- The stand is great... Nice minimalist/industrial design with a non-slip base/surface on which the OQO sits.
- The fact that the power cable plugs into the bottom of the unit at the front of the stand is interesting... Not a bad thing... It becomes more interesting if you plug the power supply and OQO into the docking cable. This is a bit more cubersome... People who don't need the ports in the docking cable while the unit is "docked" will most likely plug the OQO directly into the power supply.
- As someone who often travels with poorly designed/bulky camera docking cradles, I can say that the docking cable is a great idea. Its big, but hardly too big to take with you in a backpack, sling, or small briefcase. Walt Mossberg must either travel without any of these, or use one or more very small cases or have so many other things in his case(s) that every little bit of space has already been filled
- The font size works for me (and I don't have the greatest eyesight...).
- The screen's brightness is great.
- The neoprene case is a nice touch. However, its not the easiest thing to get the unit into and out of... And after hearing garylm's overheating/battery-frying horror story, I found myself pushing the unit into its case particularly carefully. The power button is slightly recessed but I suspect that the unit could nonetheless be inadvertedly/mistakenly switched on. A "book cover" case velcroed to the back of the unit might work better (but would be a pain if you had more than one battery since you'd have to attach velcro to the back of every battery).
